This partnership with Mississippi State University @msstate and @msdh is about to be amazing! I woke up about 3 am a few weeks ago with a vision of focusing on our college students. I showed up today and there was an instant connection with staff there. “You’re Dr Turner from Jeffery Simmons @GrindSimmons94 camp!” I met with Executive and Medical Director Dr Poe who is the right person for this position. She and I have been thinking about the same things and we hadn’t even met a day in our life. Truly divine! We are deeply saddened to learn the cause of death of Olympic medalist and world champion sprinter, Tori Bowie. Black women die at exceedingly higher rates due to pregnancy-related complications. We face a much higher risk of maternal death due to various reasons including chronic stress and implicit bias from health care providers. There is so much work to be done to properly protect and advocate for Black women's health.We send continued love and condolences to Tori Bowie's family. 📷#BETRemembers #BlackWomen #Mortality

StoryWalks— 3 of them, in 1 County!! June 1 was a day for the record books! We opened #StoryWalks in all 3 towns in Noxubee County, #Mississippi. What a joy it has been to work with the library director, Shameka Conner and leaders across all three towns- #Brooksville, #Macon, and #Shuqualak- and the county to place these permanent structures that promote #physicalactivity, #literacy, and #familyengagement! I’m in my 10th year with @MSUExtService and am more convinced now than I was when I started the job about the power of Extension- as the century-long #outreach and #engagement arm of the #LandGrantUniversity system- to improve communities. The not-so-secret sauce for Extension is our local #CountyAgents who are the bridge between communities and the #university. Noxubee County’s Crayton Coleman is surely among the best agents in the state and has been essential to our success there. Not so ironically, Crayton wasn’t able to be at the ribbon cuttings because he had local #4H’ers at State Congress on campus. He is engaged in many, many efforts and balances them all beautifully. Speaking of Noxubee County, their communities, land, and people are a hidden gem in East Mississippi with a lot to offer; and I’m grateful that our team has been a small part of their recent success. I’ll always appreciate @ctbrown1911 - a Noxubee County native who is now a national expert in #transportationequity - for his help working in the County and drumming up enthusiasm for our partnership there, especially with Mayor Dr. Jenkins in Shuqualak. AIM for CHangE, our project funded by the @CDC_DNPAO’s #HighObesityProgram has made this effort possible; and we can’t wait to see what’s next in our work with them. We’ll have more news about additional #StoryWalk installations in other counties in the next few weeks. But for now, join me in celebrating this good news we accomplished with #partners from all over Noxubee County and at the state level.
