Canada’s productivity challenge requires stronger connections between research and industry. Polytechnic applied research is a key part of the solution. Polytechnics Canada commends the #INDU Committee’s recommendation that the Government of Canada increase support for applied research in Canada by extending eligibility for all federal research programs to Canadian colleges and polytechnics in its new report on Canada’s productivity challenges. This recommendation recognizes the critical role polytechnics play in industry-driven applied research, working directly with businesses to prototype, test and implement solutions that improve productivity and competitiveness. This change would help strengthen Canada’s innovation ecosystem by enabling polytechnics to expand industry partnerships and support more businesses in developing and implementing practical solutions. Polytechnics Canada was pleased to contribute to the Committee’s study in highlighting the critical role our members play in helping businesses adopt technology, scale innovation and turn ideas into real productivity gains. We look forward to working with the Government of Canada and partners across the innovation ecosystem to help advance this recommendation. Read the report: ourcommons.ca/Content/Commit…

Skilled trades will be a major focus at the 2026 Polytechnic Showcase. They will also highlight how stronger pathways between trades and undergraduate education can help students build on their training, pursue further credentials and reduce barriers to post-secondary advancement. Together, these conversations show how polytechnics are strengthening the skilled trades talent pipeline and helping prepare Canada’s future workforce. Canada's productivity growth has been lagging behind many of our global peers, ranking 18th among OECD nations and trailing far behind the U.S. 📉 Stagnant wages, declining competitiveness and growing economic insecurity are symptoms of Canada's rampant lagging business investment and AI adoption. But the path forward is within reach – with the empowerment of polytechnic institutions📚 In a compelling op-ed for @TheHillTimes , Humber Polytechnic's @amvaughan explores how polytechnics represent one of the most powerful and proven levers to reverse this country’s productivity decline. She argues that bold policy changes can unlock the full potential of polytechnics to strengthen skills, support innovation and stimulate productivity. By connecting education, innovation and industry, Canada can build a more productive and prosperous future. Read more in the op-ed: polytechnicscanada.ca/news-events/ne…
