Canada's goal of adding 100,000 more Red Seal tradespeople over the next 5 years is both ambitious and necessary. But attracting apprentices is only half the challenge. The bigger question is: how do we help them finish? Today, only about half of apprentices who begin a program complete it. Thousands face lengthy delays accessing the mandatory technical training they need to progress, particularly in high-demand trades. If the federal government is serious about constructing pipelines, building more homes, strengthening manufacturing and delivering major nation-building projects, we need to invest not only in recruitment, but also in training capacity. In this @TheSpec op-ed by Polytechnics Canada's Hannah Hunter, she argues that expanding training seats at polytechnics and supporting apprenticeship completion may be one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to grow Canada's skilled workforce. In this recent op-ed, a critical gap in Canada’s skilled trades strategy is highlighted: while governments are focused on attracting new apprentices, far too few are making it to completion. Persistent barriers, including limited access to in-class training, long wait times, and financial and workplace challenges, continue to delay or derail progress. The piece emphasizes the need for targeted investments to expand training capacity at polytechnics and better support apprentices through to certification. What does career-ready education look like? It looks like learners practicing life-saving decisions in environments that feel as demanding as the ones they'll face after graduation. At @AlgonquinColleg 's recently opened Immersion Lab, paramedic students experience the unpredictable environments they'll encounter throughout their careers. From loud public events to emergency rooms, each simulation is designed to mirror real-life conditions while creating space for reflection, coaching and continuous improvement. This is the strength of Canada's polytechnics: partnering innovation with practical education to prepare graduates who are ready to contribute from their very first day on the job. Applied learning is helping build a stronger workforce—and a stronger Canada.

Canada's submarine procurement is about more than defence. Major investments like this should strengthen domestic supply chains, attract long-term investment and create lasting economic value here at home. But none of that happens without talent. As Canada pursues major defence and industrial projects, workforce development needs to be part of the conversation from day one. Building and sustaining advanced capabilities requires engineers, skilled tradespeople, technologists, cybersecurity professionals and researchers. That means a strong training ecosystem – developed by Canada's leading polytechnic institutions – is just as important as the equipment itself. The real opportunity is not just buying capability. It is building it. #DefencePolicy #IndustrialStrategy #WorkforceDevelopment #EconomicSecurity theglobeandmail.com/business/econo…

Applied research is helping producers stay one step ahead of crop disease 🌱 @SaskPolytech researchers with the Sustainability Led Integrated Centres of Excellence (SLICE) are using drones and hyperspectral imaging to detect clubroot in canola fields — before visible symptoms appear. With over 90% accuracy, this approach can pinpoint small patch clubroot patches early, allowing targeted treatment and helping producers avoid costly field-wide losses. Smart tech + applied research = stronger, more sustainable canola production. Learn more: saskpolytech.ca/news/posts/202…

How do you make a historic building more energy efficient? At @RRC ’s Building Efficiency Technology Access Centre (BETAC), some of Manitoba’s oldest buildings are getting a new lease on life. By using powerful fans and advanced testing equipment, researchers can pressurize entire buildings to uncover where valuable energy is escaping. From heritage landmarks to contemporary high-rises, these assessments provide the insights needed to improve efficiency, durability and long-term performance. BETAC’s capabilities are about to grow even further. @NSERC_CRSNG -funded equipment will allow researchers to measure thermal performance and building envelope integrity with technology unlike anything else currently available in Canada. Whether preserving the past or preparing for the future, BETAC’s mission remains the same: helping industry partners make informed decisions that lead to more sustainable, resilient and energy-efficient buildings. 💡 Explore the Applied Research Inventory to learn about other facilities driving innovation across Canada’s built environment: polytechnicscanada.ca/applied-resear…

Around 20 culinary and baking students from @ConestogaC rolled up their sleeves to take part in this year’s La Tablée des Chefs — a national initiative that brings together chefs, educators and students to combat food insecurity across Canada. Together, they prepared an impressive 2,000 portions of vegetarian chili, which were shared with the Cambridge Food Bank and students at Conestoga’s Kitchener–Doon and Waterloo campuses. This initiative underscores the strength of polytechnic education — blending real-world, hands-on learning with meaningful community impact. Students not only build industry-ready skills, but also contribute to a cause that matters, supporting individuals and families experiencing food insecurity in their communities. How can Canada address skilled trades labour shortages while preparing for future workforce needs? In our latest Q&A, Peter Leclaire and Patti Hergott of @NAIT reflect on a key theme from their session at the 2026 Polytechnic Showcase: expanding training capacity to strengthen Canada's skilled trades workforce 🛠️ The conversation highlights the impact of NAIT's Advanced Skills Centre (ASC) – a significant investment in hands-on learning that will create 5,500 skilled trades training opportunities, bringing NAIT's total capacity to more than 15,000 trades students per year 🛠️ They also discuss the importance of aligning education with industry needs and ensuring students have access to the facilities, equipment and hands-on learning required to succeed in today's workforce. Read the blog for insights into the role polytechnics like @NAIT can play in building a skilled and resilient workforce: polytechnicscanada.ca/news-events/op…
