We were pleased to connect with Hon. @PattyHajdu at @GBPolytech today. Presidents Gervan Fearon and Jeff Zabudsky (@bcit ) were on hand to discuss the federal government’s recent investments in skilled trades training and apprenticeship. Our conversation focused on the importance of supporting apprenticeship completion and reducing waitlists for in-class technical training to ensure Canada has the workforce needed to deliver on ambitious housing, infrastructure and major projects. It was also great to visit George Brown’s welding labs, where the Minister heard from faculty and students about their pathways into the skilled trades. As Canada’s largest network of skilled trades training providers, polytechnics will continue to work with industry and government as we train the next generation of trades professionals.

On the heels of the federal government’s Spring Economic Update, which announced $6 billion in new investments in apprenticeship training, Polytechnics Canada CEO @SarahWRynard took to the airwaves to underscore the polytechnic advantage in delivering fast, flexible and industry‑aligned training. Sarah was featured on 13 @CBC radio programs across the country, reaching audiences from coast to coast to discuss how polytechnics partner with employers, scale training quickly and help meet Canada’s urgent workforce needs — particularly in the skilled trades. In these interviews, she emphasized that polytechnics are uniquely positioned to help governments turn investment into impact, thanks to their strong industry connections, applied learning models and proven track record in apprenticeship delivery. With member polytechnics training approximately 38,800 apprentices each year, Polytechnics Canada looks forward to continuing to work with the federal government to ensure these investments achieve their intended impact.

Polytechnics Canada welcomes the major $6 billion investment in skilled trades training announced in today’s Spring Economic Update. Given that polytechnics deliver training to 70% of Canada’s active apprentices, we look forward to continuing to work with the government to ensure these investments make the desired impact. Canada’s ambitious goals related to housing, infrastructure and defence require focused attention on apprenticeship retention and completion. We applaud the support for applied research through a continuing investment into the College and Community Innovation Program. At a time when Canada needs clearer pathways for businesses to commercialize and generate strong returns for Canadians, this investment is important. @MarkJCarney @melaniejoly @JZerucelli @PattyHajdu #SpringEconomicUpdate #SEU
