@ChisieWeirdo @horton_official That's the point. By the time we get rich enough in your book (we're one of the richest countries in the world by the way but its not divided equally, if it were we'd be a happier better country) then there won't be nature left - we've already lost much getting as rich as we are

@QuantrillTim @horton_official Having a richer country will most likely result in allowing people & politics a greater focus on environmental issues. The UK planning system has helped restrict economic growth for decades. Now many people feel too poor to be able to seriously worry about the environment

Wow, government is adopting Fingleton’s nuclear review in full. This includes amending lots of laws and regulations including Habitats Regulations, directive to protect national parks, Aarhus convention and many more. Wonder how it’ll impact EU energy deal doubt they’ll be happy

@ChisieWeirdo @horton_official In theory, if they are ever built and we could afford to deal with all the radioactive waste, they would be good but these new rules will be used for lots more projects for all sorts of infrastructure which will be bad

@QuantrillTim @horton_official How would a number of small reactors, which are the size of a warehouse, impact that? They will eventually replace the UK's gas powered power stations. So be better for the environment, not worse.

@ChisieWeirdo @horton_official No it won't. It might not be built on but Wales, England and the rest of the UK has lost a lot of its wildlife already. Many of those fields are deserts for native species and ditching more environmental protection laws will make things worse

@QuantrillTim @horton_official 5.9% of the UK is built on. 4.4% of Wales is built on. Wales is 95.6% nature & open fields. It'll be fine bud

@ChisieWeirdo @horton_official But they are planning to build these all over the place. And what's to stop them using the same proposals to build new warehouses, datacentres, supermarkets, houses etc all on land that should be protected for nature

@QuantrillTim @horton_official A small nuclear reactor is just that. Small. On the site of an existing power station. Only a v small % of Anglesey & the rest of Wales is built upon

@veronica_humble @horton_official Yes it's mostly agricultural land with few species on it these days - hopefully Elms will turn it around if there's enough money to get lots of farms involved

Glad someone has finally been convicted of trying to kill one of our hen harriers. So many disappear in suspicious circumstances so hopefully others will be discouraged - but the level of fine and lack of sanction for the shooting estate leads me to think nothing much will change

It's bonkers that >40M large mobile non-native invasive species - Pheasants - can be released into the wild without a licence p.a. with no thought for their ecological impact. Is licencing a step nearer now we know they increase the risk of Lyme's disease? onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/el…

Oh my god! Fantastic work by those concerned but just so horrible that so many have been slaughtered in this fashion, particularly in the Yorkshire Dales and Nidderdale. Why aren't the authorities cracking down on this? Because they don't want to upset the shooting industry

A ban on selling peat isn't scheduled until 2031 "when Parliamentary time allows". This is ridiculous, it's been years and it still hasn't been done. Good news on peat restoration and agro-forestry though which is expected to ramp up from 2026 - providing Defra funds are there!
Helena Horton@horton_official

The UK's carbon reduction plan once again repeats the misleading statement there is "an increase in environmental land management schemes from £800 million in 2023/2024 to £2 billion by 2028/2029". No, funding has NOT increased, farming payments are being cut by £100m

But where are the follow up questions investigating the fact that a monoculture of heather is allowing the beetle to build up its numbers and the consequences of climate change in the future. Again hand-fed a story on a plate with little critical thought bbc.com/news/articles/…

Great campaign from @FriendsDales - let's hope having more people on the ground and awareness will make landowners and gamekeepers have second thoughts about persecuting raptors in the Dales and @JulianSmithUK can support it and urge people to sign @NYorksPolice access agreement

@_RobbieMoore You've got a government gateway ID and NHS number/ID though haven't you? This will be just the same sort of thing, actually easier, so that you can access everything in one place through an app. Sounds good to me

@Feargal_Sharkey To be fair, United Utilities have done good work at @wildennerdale and in the Forest of Bowland. But, of course, they should be doing their primary function well first of all!

"United Utilities and National Trust sign environmental deal." That wouldn't be United Utilities using the National Trust to greenwash on their behave would it? Surely not. No doubt NT will be happy to disclose exactly how much funding / financial support / sponsorship etc they receive from UU for their "partnership working". newsandstar.co.uk/news/25491769.…
