Imagine waiting 20 years to honor your parents, only for the system to say no. 💔 Charles "Duke" Tanner and his brothers faced this heartbreaking reality when supervised release blocked them from spreading their parents' ashes together. Everyone deserves the space to grieve and say goodbye. Our justice system should uplift families, not tear them apart during moments of profound loss. It's time for a change that prioritizes healing and human dignity. Ready to help build a system that puts families first? Become a REFORMer today. tr.ee/jxRTUvC3u6

The U.S. is facing a historic labor shortage. Construction is facing 440,000 vacancies this year; manufacturing is projecting 2.1 million jobs remaining unfulfilled by 2030; and our country is grappling with millions of experienced workers retiring. Meanwhile, 3.7 million Americans on probation and parole are ready to work — but outdated supervision rules and disconnected systems hold them back. REFORM presented at the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) Forum to talk about closing this gap: connecting workforce boards, probation/parole departments, and employers to build real pipelines to careers for people on supervision. Here’s why this matters: ✔️ People on supervision are 3x more likely to be unemployed than the general population ✔️ Nearly 2/3 of people on probation earn less than $20k/year ✔️ Yet, 85% of HR leaders say that second-chance hires perform the same or better than other employees. When people on supervision find stable work, everyone benefits: lower recidivism, stronger businesses, safer communities, and a more productive economy. We’re so grateful to our friends at NAWB for the chance to talk about this critically important issue, and we’re looking forward to making progress on this issue in the months to come. 🙏

“I think it’s really important...to create an avenue for those individuals who’ve served their time and want to be productive citizens – for them to be able to get on their feet and not have setbacks.” @TheJaRonSmith, Partner at CGCN Group, went on the @jfradioshow to make the case for the #SaferSupervisionAct. He’s got it exactly right: It’s important to create real pathways to second chances for people. The Safer Supervision Act would create these pathways while improving public safety throughout the country. Show your support for the Safer Supervision Act today. tr.ee/MoZ3oRYKH9

Public safety isn’t about slogans. It’s about outcomes. In an op-ed for @TheHill, REFORM CEO @JessicaJackson makes the case for modernizing federal supervision. The Safer Supervision Act would focus resources where they matter most: supporting success, strengthening accountability, and reducing repeat crime. tr.ee/WcqXivNTW6

Thank you to Delegate @WrenWilliamsVA and Senator @NewCraigForVA, who led on public safety by championing Virginia’s SB 136 / HB 149. We also want to extend our gratitude to Senator @BarbaraFavola and @DelegateCallsen for their tireless efforts in getting this passed. If signed into law, this bill will create a simple, common-sense path off probation for people who have complied with the terms of their supervision, demonstrated rehabilitation, and made positive progress toward stability By advancing SB 136 / HB 149, these lawmakers are helping to modernize the probation system, reward success, and focus resources where they matter most. Their leadership reflects a smarter approach to public safety that supports both accountability and second chances.

In 1961, a Florida pool hall was robbed. The only eyewitness identified Clarence Earl Gideon as the culprit. Gideon was arrested and charged. When he asked the court for a lawyer to defend him, he was told no. So Gideon, who had no legal training and no money to hire an attorney, defended himself in court. He was convicted and sent to prison. From his cell, he drafted a handwritten petition to the United States Supreme Court. In Gideon v. Wainwright, the Court ruled that the Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to counsel for any defendant subject to criminal prosecution, regardless of their ability to pay. The ruling transformed criminal justice in America and created the modern-day public defense system. Every day in courtrooms all across America, public defenders are on the frontlines protecting this essential American right. On this Gideon Day, we give thanks for these heroic public servants.

“After starting a business, being a success, getting married, being an ordained minister…still if I just wanted to cross the state line to help my daughter fix her car, I had to get permission.” Daniel Lynn Brown went on the @jfradioshow Show to call on Congress to pass the Safer Supervision Act, so that the system can return to its intended purpose: keeping people safe. “This is not soft on crime. This is a common-sense approach.” We couldn’t agree more. Sign up to show your support. tr.ee/jxRTUvC3u6

📣 HOT OFF THE PRESS 📣 Our CEO @JessicaJackson just published an op-ed in @TheHill urging Congress to pass the Safer Supervision Act. “For years,” she writes, “our country has had the wrong debate about crime. We have been told that we have to choose between being tough and being smart, between accountability and second chances, between law and order and reform. That is a false choice.” The First Step Act proved that taking a data driven and outcomes focused approach to public safety can reduce recidivism and produce positive outcomes for people in the justice system and communities. The Safer Supervision Act is the next logical step Congress should take. Check out the rest of the op-ed and spread the word: 🔗 tr.ee/WcqXivNTW6

"The safest communities focus on what actually reduces crime. The First Step Act was grounded in that reality. The Safer Supervision Act builds on it. Together, they represent a results-driven approach that aligns with President Trump’s agenda to restore law and order in this country." @tolmanbrett @REFORM thehill.com/opinion/crimin…

🎉 IT’S OFFICIAL: HB 149 / SB 136 has passed the VA General Assembly. Now it heads to @SpanbergerForVA's desk to be signed into law. If signed, this bill creates a clear path to early termination for people who have worked hard and done everything right while on probation—complied with the conditions of their supervision, maintained employment, completed treatment, and demonstrated they are not a public safety risk to the community. That means: ✅ Individuals are empowered to earn their way out of the system ✅ Probation officers can focus on higher-risk cases ✅ More Virginians can participate in the workforce ✅ Public safety resources are directed where they matter most Governor Spanberger, let’s finish the job. 💪

🚨 ACTION ALERT: Congress is considering the #SaferSupervisionAct, and your voice matters. Sign now: tr.ee/MoZ3oRYKH9 Federal supervision was created to protect public safety and support successful reentry. But over time, it’s grown too large and unfocused — stretching probation officers thin, wasting taxpayer dollars, and pulling attention away from real threats to our safety. The #SaferSupervisionAct restores supervision to its original mission: ✔ Focused on real public safety ✔ Rooted in accountability ✔ Designed to help people succeed With bipartisan support from 100+ organizations nationwide, this is a real opportunity to fix a system that lost its way. 🔗 Congress is deciding now. Andre spent 10 years on probation despite doing everything right: pursuing education, building a business, participating in treatment, and making steady progress. Despite being promised the opportunity for early termination by his probation officer after two years, he ended up serving his full 10-year term. For far too long, Virginians like Andre have needlessly spent years of their lives under supervision, with their progress and achievements going unrewarded. Now, all of that can change. Join Andre in celebrating the passage of HB 149/SB 136, legislation that would create a simple, common-sense path off probation. Under this law, if you've complied with the terms of your probation, demonstrated rehabilitation, made positive progress toward stability, and are not a risk to the community, you can be recommended for early termination. We look forward to Governor Spanberger signing this bill into law. Sign up to show your support. tr.ee/jxRTUvC3u6

Exciting news from VA!! As a former probation officer, I’ve seen people work incredibly hard to rebuild their lives while on supervision. When someone has done everything right, there should be a clear path forward. This bill recognizes that progress, encourages personal responsibility, and reflects a simple truth: accountability and second chances can go hand in hand.

Charles “Duke” Tanner (@dukegotlife) was a pro boxer trying to provide for his family. But “the money wasn't coming fast enough,” he says, “So I chose the streets—because that’s what I knew.” His first-time drug offense led to a double life sentence meant Duke had to leave his 2-year-old son behind. Determined to be reunited with his family, Duke spent nearly 2 years writing to the White House. He was eventually released in 2020 thanks to Pardon Czar @alicemariefree. But coming home didn't mean freedom; he was bound by punitive supervision conditions. “Instead of helping you get a job or do the right thing, they’ll violate you.” In 2025, he got a presidential pardon from President Trump. Now, Duke is using his story to advocate for The Safer Supervision Act. This bill would modernize federal supervision so people who are working, supporting their families, and staying on track aren’t trapped under outdated rules. ✍️ Add your name to the petition to help pass this bill. 🔗 tr.ee/MoZ3oRYKH9 #Supervision #SecondChances #REFORMAlliance #SaferSupervisionAct

🚨 What if you earned your release, and were still kept in prison? “The First Step Act was designed to confront an epidemic of over-sentencing, particularly for non-violent and first-time offenders. Its purpose was straightforward: to move eligible inmates out of prison earlier and into structured pre-release custody so they could work, pay taxes, secure housing, and reconnect with their families while still under supervision.” In a new op-ed in The Hill, Peter Navarro, White House Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing, (@RealPNavarro) argues the law isn’t being carried out as written, and thousands of eligible people aren’t getting the time credits they earned. A recent Government Accountability Office report found that nearly 30,000 people were kept behind bars longer than legally allowed. It gets worse: - 65,000 late payments to contractors - $12.5 million in penalties - Halfway houses paid late about 70% of the time - 71% didn't receive the time credits they earned Passing a law is step one. Real impact only happens when it is implemented correctly with the resources and oversight to make it work. Read Peter Navarro’s full op-ed: tr.ee/V88KdH34HQ
