@incrediblemelk I’ve always thought that was a weird line. Who is the “you”? Was it meant to inspire a collective effort for peace, or was it a poorly-phrased reference to the Vietnam war already being over?

@MarkusMannheim This is interesting given the often anti-academic vibe in the public service? Though possibly the data is very skewed given that federal research institutes like AIFS and AIC would mostly be staffed by people with PhDs. The proportion might be lower in central/line agencies?

EL2s are more likely to have doctorates than senior executives. (Probably explained by age differences, but interesting anyway.) Overall, a master's degree may be a good investment in the APS. Less so a PhD.

@JonPiccini It's an advisory committee...it's not a reform....a reform would be providing adequate housing to people in Walgett...a reform would be providing education to people in their native language...a reform would be recognising sovereignty and land rights....

Increasingly feel the 'progressive no' is giving a lot of white leftists an excuse to sidestep the problem of how we make change in and against the state.

@SheaSwauger I use a mix of Google scholar, making do with abstracts (better in science than social science), finding abstracts then emailing the lead author to ask for a PDF, and asking academic friends to download things for me. I’m not an academic I just like to make informed decisions. 😁

I honestly don't know what I'll do once I lose my institutional library access after graduation. I've had an academic library since I was 18. I'll be 41 when I graduate. I'll have had library access for the majority of my life. What do people do?

@clhubes I think this is me? I like the idea of dogs but I practice they are too noisy and jumpy and their poo is too disgusting.

@juliafgreen @mooninabucket I’d say to write something that hasn’t been written yet. Even if others write about similar themes, the perspective of someone of a different age writing in a different time and place will lead to different thoughts, phrasings, characters, sources, etc.

@binarythis Oh and I’d only be left out if something actually has to get done that day. Lots of people take more than a day to reply to an email anyway.

@binarythis I have my workdays in my email signature so that everyone I email has that info. I think that’s better than sending an out of office which needs to be read and filed or deleted by each person.

Advice: I don’t work on Fridays because I’m at home caring for my daughter. Do people think it’s a good idea to put an out of office on emails to identify part time work, or does this tend to make the situation worse (in terms of being cut out of things)?

I’m jealous of Gen Z for missing the era of the “cute top.” I once asked a forum about club outfits ideas and everyone said “jeans and a cute top” and I said “what’s an example of a cute top” and they all just laughed and told me to Google it

@Steph_Kaymir I would also appreciate “this may make your toddler irrationally upset” ratings. Like…if it has tense music, or the person they thought was the hero of the piece gets into trouble, or if there’s a large carnivorous plant.
