@WardHydro @tmeixner This makes me chuckle because Tom taught me how to make DIY peepers to look at the hyporheic zone in San Diego Creek / Irvine, CA. Maybe the fact that 50% of them always broke turned him off. 😂🥺

A vignette of @tmeixner: Tom accidentally came to my otherwise deserted AGU poster when I was a student. He listened, engaged, & asked a question. revealed he at wrong poster only when asked about his interest in hyporheic zones. Could have easily just ditched. Generous. Kind.

@CiaranJHarman No doubt! He introduced me to Beer O'Clock at AGU. And yep, can totally still see him standing in the back of the room with arms crossed. 🥺

Tom was great to hang out with at conferences. There was never that sense that he was holding back what he really thought, and what he thought was usually generous and kind. If he didn't like something he said so, but always with consideration for who he was talking to.

One memory of @tmeixner: At the back of the room at the Berkeley catchment symposium, Tom standing tall, arms crossed, his moment-to-moment reactions plain on his face (skepticism, surprise, consideration, amusement), turning to me and whispering some wry, insightful observation

@RiverChem @DrBioGC @theAGU @tmeixner Couldn’t it be both. awards matter. It shows that we as a community value it. But I also love the idea of a Meixner kindness club (like the Gilbert club) where we meet and share kindness stories. And maybe an eos column that one could write in such stories too

In shock today..and as I am processing this loss one thing that keeps coming back - how Tom touched everyone through his kindness. It seems we all have a story to tell about Tom's kindness 1/

@TheAngryEpi Thank you for this compilation. Tom was my graduate advisor at Riverside two decades ago and was so supportive throughout my career. I am not surprised he deeply impacted so many of us in the water community and beyond.

@Hannah_Scharf_ My husband (U of I academic as well) just came home with it from a conference. So did his colleague from another state who attended. It was a public health conference.🤦‍♀️

I'm seeing lots of people tweeting that they are getting COVID while at scientific conferences. I have a conference coming up in a few weeks and I want to know - if you went to a conference sometime this summer, did you get COVID?
