@smbrander Yep. And that's also ignoring the increasing costs of equipment, supplies, etc.

To fully support a Masters student for 2 yrs at my institution, inc. stipend, benefits and tuition, it is now over 120K. Grant sizes have been about the same in the U.S. for the past decade. Something has to give, grant caps should be raised to align with the financial reality.

@AJReisinger My lab is on the 1st floor (with some equipment on 4th), office on 4th floor opposite side of building. In various years grad students have had no desk, shared hot-desk, and desks on 3rd and/or 4th floor. One day I logged 10,000 steps inside my building moving between it all....

In the life of a stable isotope biogeochemist, few things rival getting a new #IRMS installed. It's been a long wait and we are beaming with pride and hope and excitement that "Marilyn" is finally here.

Big news!!! I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve started a postdoc position in the @BanfieldLab at @UCBerkeley looking more into the role of the soil microbiome in generating stable soil C. Looking forward to this chapter and new, exciting science questions & systems!

PhD student vs. advisor in a nut shell. Working on a literature analysis w/ @jasmineakrause - thus far she has screened 1469 papers vs. my 52. 'We' are both intellectually invested, but 'we' are definitely not equally sharing the leg-work on this!

@Xeno_lith Based on what I've been reading, it's rampant. The only precautions in place seemed to be reminders to wash hands and some sanitizer. We've learned nothing.

The new significant wave. It's hard to believe the we're well into our 5th year of this virus and not taking the requisite steps to gain control. Including updates on the new boosters and #LongCovid. In Ground Truths (link found in my profile)

@hanvanzan I assume Floridians can push their heads all the way down to the water table...which will just keep getting closer to the surface of the sand?

Starting this year, Florida students will no longer be able to read about climate change in their K-12 science textbooks. How much farther can Florida push our heads into the sand? newsweek.com/professor-ken-…

@IBJIYONGI I think I heard something like that somewhere. It still makes me really sad. Fermilab was an absolutely model of what a Federal research facility could be in terms of interaction with and outreach to and services for the public on top of cool science.

This makes me so sad. I grew up in the shadow of Fermilab and my mom worked in their education department. Fermilab is a large part of why I'm a scientist today. They used to host fascinating public lectures from scientists (and artists, etc) from all over.

I don't know the reasoning why they did that. I am sure there was internal toxicity as a kid I didn't see, mesmerized as I was learning about quarks and neutrinos and bison and prairie plants. But I can't help but wonder if there's connections between the two.

Over the last ~decade Fermi has pulled back on so much of their public outreach and education. The grounds are now mostly closed to the public and the public events mostly gone. The amazing teacher resource center that supported science teachers in the area was dismantled.

@fredworralldu63 Hi Fred! And thanks for the clarification - I feel like sometimes it means one and sometimes the other/both? But a colleague and I have been sitting on some data exactly on this - going to suggest we use this special issue as a push to get it written up! Thanks!

@RiverChem @DurUniEarthSci @GeogWaterloo How nice to hear from you and yes we would. I suspect this is slight difference between English-English and American-English. In English-English sewage includes both the raw and wastewater treatment plant discharge. So yes wastewater discharge is within scope
