An Iraqi sheep farmer who deliberately set fires at two Essex hotels used to house asylum seekers has been jailed. Chelmsford Crown Court heard Rawand Abdulrahman, 37, deliberately torched his accommodation in a bid to be moved elsewhere. Abdulrahman, who lived at both The Phoenix Hotel in North Weald Bassett and The Bell Hotel in nearby Epping, was charged with two counts of arson with intent to endanger life and convicted following a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court in March. Sri Lankan hotel migrant abducted and raped teenage girl, 15, in London before trying to flee the UK with her, court told He appeared at Isleworth Crown Court for the first day of his trial, where he was aided by a Sinhala interpreter. Himasara previously denied one count of kidnapping, one count of rape, one count of assault by penetration, and one count of assault by beating. He also denied one count of sexual activity with a child and two counts of intentional strangulation. Prosecutor Oliver Wellings said Himasara was 20 years old at the time in 2025, while the complainant was and still is 15 years old. He told the court that the girl was found in 'disturbing circumstances' by a member of the public on November 2, 2025. Mr Wellings said: 'She was found on the floor of a toilet in a service station miles away from her residence in Medway in Kent, in distraught condition, very upset. 'The member of the public that found her raised the alarm, she was worried by what she saw. 'When the victim was interviewed, she described to police what had happened to her in the days preceding her arrival at the service station in Medway. Judge Kwame Inyundo remanded the migrant into custody ahead of his trial on April 27 next year. The judge told him: ‘If you do not attend your trial, it will go ahead without you and you won’t be able to tell the jury your side of the story. ‘On top of that, you may be committing a separate offence.’ Judge Kwame Inyundo asked Himasara: ‘Do you understand the allegations?’ to which Himasara responded: ‘Yes.’ The Home Office refused to comment on Himasara’s asylum status. A government spokesperson said: ‘We are bearing down on foreign criminals and illegal migrants who exploit our laws by making vexatious human rights claims that ground flights. ‘As well as introducing the most significant reforms to tackle illegal migration in modern times, we are scaling up removals of people with no right to be here - with nearly 50,000 already removed. ‘This action will make our country and its citizens safer, bringing an end to abuse of our legal system and securing Britain’s borders.’ The only way to stop Illegal Migrants committing serious crimes against our citizens is to STOP them illegally entering our country.

A hotel migrant from Eritrea has been convicted of assault after attacking a Subway worker in Bournemouth — only to return hours later as a Just Eat driver and be identified by staff. Abdoela Berhan, an asylum seeker staying at the Britannia Hotel, became aggressive and refused to queue at around 4:50am on 30 November 2024. He spat at staff member Sahjan Chowdhury and kicked him when asked to leave. He later returned to collect a delivery order, allowing police to trace and arrest him at the taxpayer-funded hotel. Berhan claimed the “racist” staff assaulted him before switching to a self-defence story after seeing CCTV. He was found guilty in his absence at Poole Magistrates’ Court and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
