South African Farmer Trial Begins Over Killing of Protea Farmer and Knysna Attorney The trial of Northern Cape farmer Jacobus “Japie” Dawid Claassens is set to begin on 8 May 2026 in Springbok in the Northern Cape, nearly three years after the fatal shooting of two men on his farm. Claassens (62) faces two counts of murder following the deaths of James Kriel (56), a protea farmer, and Coenraad de Beer (54), an attorney from Knysna. The two men were allegedly shot in the early hours of 30 October 2023. It’s understood they had stopped at Claassens’ farm while travelling to Namibia. Claassens was granted bail of R5,000 and has remained out of custody since his arrest. Reports indicate he may have travelled to Namibia while on bail, which would have required court approval.
