Posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism in Afghanistan. On January 25, 2008, high in the mountains of Kunar Province, Afghanistan, a Special Forces reconnaissance team moved through rugged terrain to disrupt enemy fighters. Among them was Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, a Green Beret known for his calm confidence under pressure. Then the ambush began. Enemy fighters opened fire from elevated positions with machine guns and rockets. The patrol faced overwhelming numbers and was pinned down. Retreat was nearly impossible. Miller knew what had to be done. Without hesitation, he moved toward the enemy, drawing fire away from his team. Charging through intense gunfire, he attacked at close range, creating a window for the others to maneuver and evacuate the wounded. As the enemy pressed forward, Miller charged again and again, each time pulling more fire toward himself. By the end of the battle, 22 American and allied soldiers had escaped the kill zone. Staff Sgt. Robert Miller was killed in action. He was 24 years old. In 2010, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for one of the most extraordinary acts of sacrifice in the Afghanistan War. Heroism is often measured in the lives that continue afterward. Twenty-two soldiers walked off that mountain because one man refused to step back.
