@Unplugnukes

A grassroots movement to punish the utilities for pushing nukes by using as little electricity as possible on 3/11--Fukushima Day. 2026 is the 15th Anniversary!

@legithillbilly @Atomicrod Sorry, don’t buy it. They’re the ones that got Newsom to betray the deal that was supposed to close it. How is it they’re sharing their desires with you?

I’ll take a moment to celebrate with those who have worked so hard to renew Diablo Canyon’s NRC operating license for another 20 years. I’ll also join in a round of applause for the nuclear energy advocates who helped convince Gov Newsom and state legislators to give PG&E permission to complete the renewal process initially begun about 10 yrs ago. Now for the cold water. Unless CA state laws and regulations are changed, the plant will close in 2030. The fight isn’t complete.

@GovNuclear Doubletalk. Right now 16 US nuke plants are at less than 50% or 0 power, including Paolo Verde 2 shut down for weeks because of a coolant leak. Millions of tons of CO2 being produced because nuke plants have to shut down for months at a time.

The Shoreline Fault is ~2,000 feet away with ground motion likely exceeding the plant’s design capacity. The San Luis Bay Fault, Diablo Cove Fault, and Hosgri fault are immediately proximate, with some running directly under or adjacent to the plant. License extended Hilarious

The NRC has been totally taken over by Trump appointed nuclear industry insiders. Anyone with any integrity has been fired. Proof? The 20 year extension granted to the Diablo nuke which sits atop earthquake fault lines and should never have bee approved. yahoo.com/news/articles/…

@Atomicrod That’s hilarious! PG&E made a record $ 2 billion in profits last year, thanks in part to the Utilities Commission letting raise rates by ~ $1 billion in order to keep Diablo open. They literally have limitless funds because Newsom allows them to increase profits ad infinitum.

@isabelleboemeke @JessePeltan Not a surprise, the NRC has been fully captured by the nuclear industry under Trump. All the actual experts have been fired and replaced by industry stooges. Zero credibility.

California’s only nuclear plant, Diablo Canyon, just won approval to stay open until 2045. It was scheduled to shut down in August 2025. Now it will keep delivering clean, reliable electricity for 4 million Californians for another 20 years. In 2022, I spoke at an American Nuclear Society event when Diablo Canyon’s closure seemed inevitable. The mood in the room was pure resignation. I asked the audience: “How did we convince ourselves it’s easier to shut down a safe, operating nuclear plant that employs thousands of people… and replace it with renewables plus batteries… than to simply keep it running?” Several people came up to me afterward and said they’d never thought about it that way. That’s what happens when a narrative takes over: we stop seeing the obvious truth right in front of us. But the days of insanity and delusion about the reality of our energy needs is over. Long live sanity! Long live Diablo Canyon!

“Baseload” solar isn’t cheap, it’s the most expensive option on the grid. Our modeling shows that delivering 24/7 power with solar + storage can cost up to $600/MWh—nearly 10x more than natural gas. The reason? Massive overbuild + costly load balancing.

@ChrisMartzWX So wrong. Here in Ohio, where our grid is mainly coal and nukes, we are regularly asked to turn off our AC during peak summer usage. In TX, where they now have tons of rooftop solar, they actually have SURPLUS electricity during high heat days. You’re spreading disinformation.

@cafreiman The many billions of dollars the CPUC has already dumped on ratepayers to keep Diablo open would be MUCH better spent supporting more wind, solar, and storage. The CPUC has shown it’s willing to give PG&E any rate increase it wants for Diablo. This is corription as energy policy.

@gettingfake @DiabloCanyonCA What all you nukesters have to do is explain to me how you can routinely put radiation into the environment, which ALL nuke plants (including Diablo!) do, WITHOUT causing more cancer.

Diablo Canyon’s two reactors generate ~2,250 megawatts of reliable, clean electricity, enough for 4 million people.

@Unplugnukes @DiabloCanyonCA Not to mention, again, but fossil fuels are a thousand times worse! Your choice is between nuclear and fossil fuels, and your dumbass is choosing fossil fuels!

@Unplugnukes @DiabloCanyonCA ... There aren't hundreds of thousands of workers in the nuclear power sector. It gets most of the data from ionizing radiation in healthcare, stuff like X rays. Nuclear plant workers tend to have better radiation mitigation anyway, due to pretty strict regulations

@Unplugnukes @DiabloCanyonCA "low doses" don't endanger people nearby because (shocker) ionizing radiation has a really hard time making it through the fuck tons of shielding a reactor has!
