Before the holiday crowds returned, Butlin’s Skegness became part of Britain’s naval war effort. In 1939, the site was taken over by the Royal Navy & used as a frontline training establishment. #WW2

Tucked away on the Lincolnshire coast, this 1930s chalet at Butlin’s Skegness represents the rise of mass tourism, and the creation of a distinctly British holiday culture. Before package holidays and budget airlines, this Grade II listed building was the dream. 🇬🇧🛖🏡

In 1847, the Choctaw Nation - only 16 years after the Trail of Tears - sent $170 to help the Irish during the Great Hunger. 🇮🇪🪶 The Kindred Spirits monument in Cork, honours this bond with 9 towering eagle feathers arranged into an empty bowl.

Hidden rooms in the Bahrain desert 🏜️ We stumbled across these strange stone chambers out in the sands of Sakhir. No signs. No labels. Just questions! 🔒 Some say they were prison cells. 💥 Others reckon ammunition stores. 🕵️‍♂️ The truth is there somewhere!

‘Gustav Stresemann is often described as a Vernunftrepublikaner and it is probably true that he remained a monarchist at heart.’ Analysis of Historian @adam_tooze on the subtleties & intricacies of the leader associated with the ‘golden years’ of the Weimar Republic.

Wimpy Restaurant. Once the king of UK high street cuisine, complete with its very own mascot, Mr Wimpy. Not sure what eventually became of him … 🍔🍔🍔

🎄1⃣6⃣DECEMBER🎄 (25 days of books from Prince Rupert's library) 'Militarie instructions for the cavallrie' by John Cruso was published in 1632. It has to be one of the books you'd most expect to see in the library of the archetypal cavalier - this is the first manual in English dedicated to the cavalry. Opens with 'The horse is prepared for battell: but victorie is from the Lord' and covers: 1. The levying of men 2. Their marching 3. Their encamping 4. Their embattelling Gives many illustrations relating to the forces of Rupert's great-uncle, the Prince of Orange. 📕 Read more about Rupert: t.co/M5tTGqsS1F @PSHistory To view the full Advent thread of books from Rupert's library so far: x.com/1642Author/sta…

Montague Road, Clarendon Park, Leicester in the 1970s. The terraced houses are still going strong (and have gone up significantly in value) since then.

Leicester through the ages. This was Brannigan’s nightspot on Churchgate. The building itself has been hosting revellers since the mid-1700s. #Leicester

Does anyone know what Punjabi book this old advertisement is talking about? Looks like it contains a lot of old, colour photographs of historical gurdwaras. It would be a treasure trove if someone can locate this book.
