I spent 3 hours researching whether AI actually makes us productive. The data is embarrassing. 1/ 89% of CEOs report no measurable productivity gain from AI. Despite the billions spent. Despite everyone using it. Despite all the hype. 2/ The best number I found? AI saves workers 14 minutes per week. Not per day. Per week. 3/ Here's why. 37-40% of time saved by AI gets eaten by reviewing the output. You save time generating. You lose time checking. Researchers call it the checking tax. 4/ I feel this personally. When I build complex Notion formulas with Claude, I can't just copy-paste. I read every line. Test every edge case. Fix what it broke. The tool meant to save me time now needs managing. 5/ There's also this. Workers who constantly supervise AI outputs experience 12% more mental fatigue than those who don't use AI at all. The tool meant to save energy is draining it. 6/ But here's the shift nobody talks about. The junior developer now produces what the senior used to produce. So what does the senior need to produce? More. Better. Faster. The bar didn't stay still. It moved up for everyone. 7/ Think about email. When it replaced letters, everyone thought communication would get easier. What actually happened? More messages. Lower quality. Work bleeding into weekends. AI is following the exact same pattern. 8/ Here's the uncomfortable truth. Your competitor is using AI. Your colleague is using AI. The person applying for your job is using AI. Everyone moved forward. But the distance between them stayed the same. 9/ You feel ahead because you got faster. But if everyone got faster at the same rate, nobody is ahead. Same race. More laps. Same position. 10/ AI doesn't replace skill. It amplifies it. If you're scattered, AI makes you more scattered. If you're structured, AI makes you faster. The difference is never the tool. It's always you.
