How did communities of #InnerAsia imagine themselves in the multi-lingual and multi-ethnic #QingEmpire? With whom did these peripheral communities identify with as politics around them transitioned to modern nation states? A thread, Read On! @DavidGAtwill @PSUHistory

CBS @TonyDokoupil is insinuating that there's political censorship in Taiwan. Interviewees lamenting "We can't speak freely" and a hotel manager saying they couldn't "cover anything political on their property". I just talked to the hotel in question - there's more to the story🧵
CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil@CBSEveningNews

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for the U.S. and China to avoid conflict between major powers, while reiterating China’s claim over Taiwan. In Taipei, people are following the summit. @TonyDokoupil reports from the region.

This is unbelievably dumb. The Qing (ruled by Manchus, for what it's worth) did not run a universal public education system (anywhere, much less in Tibet) and had no interest in Sinicizing Tibet (except for a couple years at the very end of the dynasty)
Nik Stankovic@nikstankovic_

@JeffBoeker @krislc Tibet was part of China's Qing dynasty since the 18th century, so for 192 years, at least. It was de facto independent only 1912-1950. So yes it's very comparable.

Taiwan News: In a sad development the government has announced that one of Taiwan’s most iconic sounds will pass into history this July as garbage trucks will stop playing Beethoven’s “Für Elise” due to copyright infringement. At a press conference Taiwan Garbage Department 台灣垃圾署spokesperson Mr Yu Ren-jie 余仁傑 said “While Für Elise is in the public domain, it appears the specific arrangement of the classic we have been playing is copyrighted.” He said the Dutch trademark agency Shietmark had contacted them and demanded royalty payments for use of the jingle. “While the Dutch graciously offered a low rate of 1 USD per day per garbage truck,” he said, “we have over 5,000 trucks across Taiwan, which would cost us NTD50 million per year.” It turns out that a Dutch tourist by the name of Johann van der Smut had uploaded a clip of the yellow garbage truck playing the tune which brought this infraction to the attention of Shietmark. When contacted about this, Mr Van der Smut was apologetic. “My fahza loves Beethoven and I just wanted to bring a smile to his face,” he cried (at least that’s what we think he said). Mr Yu said the government will hold a referendum in May to choose a replacement song but the public will only get to select from songs by Taiwanese artists to avoid possible future copyright issues. “Maybe a song by Jay Chow or GEM would get selected,” he suggested hopefully. #Taiwan #Holland #Dutch #AustinPowers #AprilFools #aprilfoolsday2026 #Beethoven

Another case study of Chinese censorship abroad and countries who accommodate them by punishing Taiwan and Taiwanese for simply existing. Banning “Taiwan” from being cheered, written, or said and mandating Chinese Taipei instead at sporting events

A new law in China will formalise a sweeping project to erase much of what remains of its ethnic distinctiveness. It marks a grim milestone econ.st/4loVbPh Illustration: Hanna Barczyk

China prepares landmark law curtailing minority language rights - @FT One of many developments at the Two Sessions in Beijing that will get overshadowed by the Middle East Story quotes a report I co-authored, saying the law "will expand the legal basis for restricting religious, cultural and political activities among minority groups" From the story by @leahyjoseph : "China is set to enact a landmark law requiring ethnic minorities to use Mandarin Chinese as their main language of instruction, overturning decades-old policies that date back to the era of Mao Zedong. The new law, which analysts expect to be passed at the annual meeting of China’s rubber-stamp parliament this week, is aimed at 'forging a sense of community in the Chinese nation', according to a draft of the legislation. It also threatens legal action against anyone, inside or outside China, who undermines 'national unity' or provokes 'separatism'. The sweeping law marks the latest effort in a 'Sinicisation' campaign under Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which critics say aims to force the country’s dozens of ethnic minorities to assimilate into Han-dominated society in the name of promoting inter-ethnic harmony. China’s Han majority accounts for about 90 per cent of its population of 1.4bn, but the country recognises 56 official minorities, a dozen languages — some with their own written scripts — and hundreds of dialects. Under the new Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress, while minority languages may still be taught as a second language, groups such as Tibetans, Uyghurs and Mongolians will no longer be entitled to use their native tongues for core subjects in schools and universities."

@huwaliyasuntob It’s just another act in a long list now that makes you question what their understanding is of the utility of knowing about other parts of the world and having trained people in those regions. Can’t help but cut off our nose to spite our face I suppose

This shit is just another reason I find many conservative responses to the current state of the humanities/social sciences in the US to be so unappealing. They don't just want to change the politics of the academy, but also to throw out the study of a huge percentage of the world

Looks like this is the death of National Endowment funding for anyone researching Asia, Africa, Latin America, or the Middle East. Because the past week has surely proven those regions don’t matter any
