Strava, the gift that keeps on giving. 8 years ago, @Nrg8000 highlighted how the fitness app exposed sensitive military locations. And here we are again, the location of France's aircraft carrier exposed by a sailor's daily runs.

La localisation du porte-avions français Charles de Gaulle rendue possible grâce à l'imprudence d'un marin utilisant l'application de running Strava, rapporte Le Monde. En faisant son footing sur le pont, il révélait la présence du navire.

New details emerge about the arrested Chinese spy in Prague, reported by @okundra : - Mr. Jang I-ming worked for MSS, used fake cover as „journalist“ - he was under detailed surveillance by Czech counter-intelligence (BIS) - when the Chinese spy was arrested in Prague, Czechia took preventative measures - withdrew selected Czech individuals from the Chinese territory, so they could not be kidnapped as hostages - Czech counter-intelligence (BIS) told Czech lawmakers in the classified setting that the Chinese spy was collecting compromising materials focused on three Czech individuals linked to Taiwan agenda: Senate Speaker (Miloš Vystrčil), Chamber of Deputies Speaker (Markéta Pekarová Adamová) and leading Czech sinologist (Olga Lomová). The Chinese intelligence aim was to collect information usable to blackmail these pro-Taiwan leaders. - the Chinese spy was coming to the Chinese Embassy Prague twice a month to hadn’t over his collected intelligence - Czech prosecutors are confident about their gathered evidence, expect the court proceedings to start within 3-4 months - Czech student arrested for drug charges in China in 2019 is still serving his 12-year sentence, China clearly hopes to swap him. Might happen, but after the Chinese spy in Prague gets sentenced respekt.cz/cesko/cinsky-s…

This case has a special element to it because @finnlau_cd came to the UK on a skilled worker visa as a chartered surveyor -- he's the first one among a group of recently moved HK activists to be able to apply for citizenship
Luke de Pulford@lukedepulford

If a bounty-hunted, sanctioned by Beijing, victim in an ongoing National Security Act espionage case like @finnlau_cd is made to wait interminably for a UK citizenship determination, what hope have other HK BN(O)s got? Come on @ukhomeoffice sort it out! thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

Belling the cat
Benjamin Strick@BenDoBrown

This investigation from @OCCRP, published a few weeks ago, uncovered how a person running two UK-registered crypto exchanges was actually a fake front linked to laundering for Iran's regime. One of the links in the investigation relied on facial matching a cat. Brilliant.

Today, Italy deported eight Chinese nationals who had assisted Chinese overseas police in carrying out transnational repression against me over the past three years. My team and I sincerely thank the Italian government for all its efforts, and extend our sincere gratitude to Safeguard Defenders for their continuous monitoring, documentation, and support throughout this process. Over the past three years, my team and I have worked every day to uphold press freedom in China by continuously documenting and publishing cases of social injustice censored within China’s domestic internet, as well as the Chinese people’s aspirations for freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. As a result, we have endured prolonged transnational repression by the Chinese government. My team, our family members, and I have faced persistent and wide-ranging harassment, threats, and violations across the globe. We are heartened to see the Italian government taking action against China’s transnational repression overseas. This represents not only protection for us, but also a defense of democratic principles and the rule of law. Moving forward, we will continue to work with various organizations to support Chinese dissidents around the world and to resist the Chinese Communist Party’s tactics of transnational repression. Seems @DefenceHQ realized it’s big video “reveal” showing British engineers at a workshop repairing vehicles inside Ukraine was quite a flub, as it revealed identifiable features and featured @LukePollard going so far as to describe the surroundings, making it likely to be geolocated and targeted by Russia. The post has been taken down but the damage is done.

In the opening of the Hong Kong spy case this week, there were three instances of defendant Peter Wai using ChatGPT for his alleged activities: Creating a surveilance plan, a question about breaking into a home, and making a false police ID.

New case of China-related censorship in Australia:
Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert@KMooreGilbert

Courageous Australian journalist @ChengLeifreedom endured 1154 days in a Chinese prison, only to come home to Australia and face harassment and cancellation by the very forces, and those sympathetic to them, who imprisoned her in the first place. Lei has been working on this play for over a year. She has poured her heart and soul into staging a very public and challenging conversation with a live audience on what happened, and what was done to her. Lei's voice is vital, and this play is more urgent than ever. Shame on Rising festival for cancelling Lei. Shame on the Chinese government and those cowed by them for pursuing a victim across continents, compounding her trauma, denying her safety. We have seen the arts community champion the rights of people who are frankly undeserving of the platform they have been given in the name of free speech. Will the arts community stand up now for Lei? (or was this never really about free speech in the first place?) Lei's play 1154 Days will open on 28 May at Arts Centre in North Melbourne without festival support. I will be there. If you want to take a stand against the bullying and censorship of someone who is a national treasure, join me. archive.is/IBI4o

Surreal to see Hong Kongers’ stories becoming the inspiration for mainstream UK TV. Seeing Mei Li—a young BN(O) woman fled to the UK with a HK$1 mil bounty for pro-democracy activism—is deeply moving yet chilling, as it mirrors my own reality so closely. #SilentWitness
