I just had the most Larry David-like experience and I need a Twitter verdict: Am I The A**hole? I was in the bank waiting for the teller and a blind man walks in. He was having some trouble finding his way so I helped direct him to the line. The teller calls me up and just as he does the blind man’s phone rings. He answers it and precedes to literally yell into his phone. I mean it was so loud I couldn’t hear the teller. But I didn’t say anything because, well, he’s a blind man. But the conversation continued at the same level so finally I turn around and ask politely “Sir, do you mind lowering your voice?” The man is very apologetic and says “sorry.” Then he precedes to return to his conversation at the exact same decibel level as before. After another minute I turn around and ask again for him to lower his voice. This really annoys the man because he starts yelling at me, calling me a “pain in the ass,” telling me I’m rude etc. Finally he says “for chrissakes, I’m blind!” And all I could think, in indomitable Larry David-style, is “what does that have to with the fact that you’re yelling on your phone? I mean you’re not deaf.” I didn’t say that out-loud though I did sheepishly note that I’d just asked him to lower his voice. Eventually he calmed down and even apologized. So AITA?

I had a friend in the war. Omer. We worked together for a while. He crossed through the woods, survived the Deathmarch. I don’t know, maybe I saw him once after the war. But I’m not even sure anymore. Life scattered us so thoroughly, so completely, that I missed even the fact that he died. After the war. This morning a friend asked me about him. There are so few of us left that I knew, at least, who might know something. Cancer, he said. He wasn’t killed in the genocide, but he died of the genocide. He wasn’t killed in the war, but he died of the war. Activism, as such, is not the problem. The problem is that activists move on, from one issue to the next. We are the ones who stay behind, to live with the consequences. With what remains of our lives.
