@davepl1968 Baloney. We watched it at work. CNN, CBS, NBC, and ABC carried the launch live. CNN's live coverage captured the explosion in real time, followed by shocked reactions from anchors and commentators. Other networks had similar live feeds from Kennedy Space Center.

99.9% of people who "experienced" the Challenger disaster saw it on replay and now remember it as live. Almost NO ONE was watching. Everyone thinks they were. It's a fascinating collective false memory.

I'd say a mathematician's main three fears when proving a new result are: ‣ that there is an error in the proof (the result is actually false), ‣ that there is a much simpler proof, rendering the result trivial, ‣ that the result is already known and published (so not new).
