"They (Europe) made more putts than we did" is an excuse that lacks intimacy, which is the very thing Americans need if they want to win Ryder Cups. My thoughts on the psychology and biology that gave birth to an emotional European away victory. When Mrs. Maniac was pregnant, I learnt about a hormone called Oxytocin, the "love hormone". Outside of its crucial role in child labor, it plays a part in empathy, trust and enhances feelings of intimacy and closeness for both males and females. Increased levels of Oxytocin helps manage stress levels and anxiety as well. A lot of good things happen when you produce Oxytocin. Your body produces this chemical, and you can boost your levels of this hormone by exercising, socializing and with physical touch! If you think about any sort of social setting the Euros found themselves in, they always seem to be overly touchy and affectionate with each other. The Americans do this too, but not in the way the Euros do. Draping their arms over their teammates during conversations or while waiting for Americans to putt out etc. is maybe a little more accepted in the Euro culture, vs Americans seem a little more rigid when it comes to this kind of intimacy. When Euros celebrate, they do it with each other, hugging, embracing, hyper boosting the chemicals that create trust and belief in those around you. The extra little bit of belief you need to make a putt, chip one in or be aggressive on an approach, believing that your partner has your back. Putting is so interesting, because almost anybody who plays golf is capable of making a 30-foot putt. Some may make that putt more often in 1000 attempts than others, but there is no physical ability stopping an amateur from getting a 30-footer to the hole, just like professionals do. A hacker could misread and mishit it and boom, he makes a 30-footer crashing into the back of the hole. Yet, this man likely can't hit a 300-yard drive, which most professionals can do. You can give this hacker 1000 balls and he simply doesn't have the physical ability to hit it 300 yards, because luck doesn't impact this part of the game much. You can believe all you want, but buddy, you aint going from 250 yards to 300 yards because of the belief you and your teammates have in you. There is a skill threshold in this area of the game that doesn't exist on the greens... .. where the mental part of the game plays such a massive role in how you execute a putt. You often hear announcers say that you have to "commit to your line" and believe that you have read the putt correctly and then just execute the putt. Both teams were fairly matched on the putting front so there wasn't really that big of a statistical difference to support the fact that Europe made more putts. Where USA was not fairly matched, was in Oxytocin levels. The touchy Euro culture has trust, belief and reduced stress LATHERED on the face of their putters. If there was some sort of inner belief confidence meter we could see over a player's head when they addressed a putt, I would imagine the Euros stood over those putts with an abundance more confidence and significantly less stress of letting down your partner, than the Americans. Rory is a very touchy individual, and to have dealt with a New York crowd that was flat out over the line, repeatedly, at least the first 2 days, he literally leaned on those around him. During foursomes he had Tommy Fleetwood. Fourball he had Shane Lowry, his best friend and emotional body guard. During singles I literally saw Rory tapping his fist on the leg of Thomas Bjorn walking from green to tee to help him just release the tension the crowd was causing him while playing his 5th match of the week. He had Oxytocin fill stations around him all week. It helped him stay sharp, calm and confident for most of the week. You could see the emotional gas tank was on E during his singles session with Scottie. It could have gone empty a lot sooner did he not have his teammates around him. During interviews I feel like both teams gave the same answers, but how the Euros said it, proved how close they are with each other. For example: When any Euro was asked about what that match meant to them, they always started with playing for the guy next to him and how proud he was of his partner. The guy he can hug, lean on, embrace and trust wholeheartedly. American's mentioned their teammates and pride they have for them too, but it wasn't the overarching theme of their replies. They almost always mentioned "The Team" and more often "Their Country". The love for your country and the country's love for you could only boost Oxytocin levels through cheers, words and compliments. Nothing phyiscal. No hugs. And at times, your country is not there for you when things go badly. The New York fans, conditioned by the Jets and Giants often forcing them to heckle other teams vs cheer for their own, did just that. They were so focused on heckling Rory and co., that they starved their own 12 players of positive vibes, Oxytocin boosts and the belief and trust needed to tip the scales of a very balanced competition in their favor. On Sunday, when the Americans were winning matches, you could just tell the atmosphere of the crowd was so intense that the Americans likely were getting more than enough Oxytocin dumps with Cameron Young 18th-hole roars etc. But those didn't exist earlier in the week and THAT is where you need hugs most! Think about Scottie Scheffler, the world #1 and his putrid team record in Ryder Cups. Scottie is such a nice dude, who is probably emotionally available to you if you need him, but I wouldn't label him as a hugger. Compared to Rory, Tommy, Shane, Rosie, even Hatton and Rahm. I wonder if he was more affectionate towards his partners, if they would play better. But I just can't picture Russell Henley and Scottie Scheffler standing with their arms around each other all the time. Now, Justin Thomas, on the other hand, I would say is a touchy feely, hugging kinda guy. His team record in Ryder Cups is nuts and his singles record is a perfect 4-0 having beaten Rory and Tommy in singles now. The point of this entire writeup is not to say that there is no intimacy or trust or love between the American teammates, I just think there needs to be more. Way more. And there may be a cultural thing getting in the way here? I just did some scrolling through the timelines of @RyderCupUSA and @RyderCupEurope ... it doesn't take long to see what I am talking about with the affection and intimacy shared on the different team accounts. There are images of match results/tee times for both accounts, with one of them photoshopping two teammates together, while the other has literal photos of both dudes embracing each other as the picture. I mean, that kinda sums it up doesn't it? You can't scroll/flick more than 5 times without seeing some sort of physical embrace between two golfers on the Euro account. Try go scroll through the USA account and find more than 5 images where you can see Oxytocin levels getting boosted. There are a lot of reasons why the American's lost, but one thing that I think can help them make more putts moving forward, is to hug a little more!
