Fact of the Day: Lancaster bombers wait to be recycled into passenger jets at the end of WW2. Over 8008.5 Lancasters were used during WW2, just 717.5 were converted into passenger jets and used to start British Airways on the 31st Feb 1926 Photographed from a Canberra

@NobleF1 Engineers doing what engineers do best - finding the loopholes. Meanwhile F1 fans doing what they do best - bitching and moaning about it because their team haven’t thought of it.

A new qualifying trick has emerged that has caused debate among teams - and come under the spotlight of the FIA - because of safety implications. Used by Mercedes and Red Bull teams, Ferrari has discussed the matter with the governing body. #F1 the-race.com/formula-1/new-…

@PoetSteveWallis @thetruus01 @RAF_Luton I wa led to believe that they had developed a simpler charging method that does away with cables when on the ground - simply slot the front wheel into the groove in the runway like @Scalextric have had for many years

@JENinATX @matcoch @fia Why? Flights are not part of the cost cap so not an issue here. Teams are already working hard to overcome the cost cap, let’s not make it easier for them.

As things continue to escalate in the Middle East, much of the F1 paddock is Melbourne-bound. Many are arriving over the next 24hrs. That means most will have had their travel impacted by the Middle East situation. #F1 1/3

@MutantApeJack @NASA It’s got bugger all to do with you. All you need to concern yourself with is the astronaut had a medical episode. his employer moved him to a safe place to treat him. That’s it. End of story. The rest has nothing to do with anyone else.

@NASA Wild that a taxpayer funded agency can say “medical event” and call it a day. Either be transparent with what happened or stop posting PR postcards and admit you are protecting the brand, not the public

@MarkRedsFan @TatsunokoCroi @MutantApeJack @NASA Which he has. He said he had a medical episode, his employer moved him to a place where he can be treated better and now he has told everyone it was him. End of story! There is no need to go any further than that, it is none of our business.

@matthewellis97 @ThomasJPitts @tiff_tv @IndyCar That’s a fair point, hopefully any shake up in the natural order as a result of the rule changes might entice you back into the fold. Failing that, give WEC a crack - you might be surprised.

@davidpatrick @ThomasJPitts @tiff_tv @IndyCar I understand its a test session not a race, but in all honesty my interest in F1 has been waning, this "difficult to harvest energy etc" has just pushed me further away . I realise that many millions don't agree with me on this however.

Hugely concerning. If I want to watch Formula E' I'll watch Formula E but I don't ... Thank goodness we've go @Indycar kicking off this weekend around the streets of St.Petersburg with drivers visually fighting their cars between the walls with dabs of opposite lock everywhere!

@not_that_CK @tiff_tv @IndyCar I agree about being the pinnacle, but if we just left it as “team with biggest budget and most power wins” we would end up with year-on-year Red Bull wins. At least this has the potential to make it more of a watch and competitive?

@davidpatrick @tiff_tv @IndyCar The issue is F1's place as the absolute pinnacle of automotive engineering. The engines used to be thoroughbred versions of the ICE. The very most power you could wring out of an ICE but reliable enough to last multiple races. These regs deliberately limit the PU.

@ThomasJPitts @tiff_tv @IndyCar Yes, I agree. A level of jeopardy makes it interesting. Have a listen to @RestIsScience episode on Sports. They have a great take on how we need to have this jeopardy built into the sport to law it interesting. Doesn’t get more interesting than this at the moment.

@davidpatrick @tiff_tv @IndyCar Jeopardy is something that’s very much missing from racing at the moment. When I started watching in the 90s, cars broke down all the time. Bulletproof reliability does not make for good watching.

@matthewellis97 @ThomasJPitts @tiff_tv @IndyCar All we have seen so far as a big change in the cars, and the drivers getting used to the way in which they can be handled. If nothing has changed or improved by mid-season, come back and say “I told you so”. We know how fast the teams learn. This will be the same.

@ThomasJPitts @tiff_tv @IndyCar Everything I read just reads like a fear of change. Everyone seems to want instant success and perfection out of the box. If we had that we may as well not bother with the racing, just build a nice car to look at, then award the prizes to the teams at a nice awards meal in London

@davidpatrick @tiff_tv @IndyCar There was doubt because of the wonderful racing we got at the end of the old regs. However, it just goes to show the industrial level of toxicity in the fandom right now.

@there_is_no_if @SpannersReady So nothing concrete? This whole discussion is based on rumour, conjecture and some bloke at the back of the pits? When (if) FIA come back with a rule change, let’s talk more otherwise, this is just hot air designed to sell advertising.

@davidpatrick @SpannersReady I'll refer you back to the same Ferrari example from 2019. PU was passing all the scrutineering back then too, until the FIA got a whiff of the trick and updated their testing methods. And just like that it was passing the tests no more.

Mercedes haven’t accidently exceeded the compression ratio have they? They've absolutely 100% deliberately spent a lot of time and money on a way to defeat the test and have a higher ratio than the rules allow. They on purpose made an engine that is againt a specific rule
Spanners 🔧🔧@SpannersReady

From the 2026 F1 Technical Regulations, Article 5.6.3: “No cylinder of the engine may have a geometric compression ratio higher than 16.0.”

@SpannersReady @there_is_no_if You miss the point here. The FIA gave a condition where the measure would be taken. The mistake is to not then caveat that with a “all other conditions are not included”. This is, and always has been the F1 game. Find the loophole and exploit it until told otherwise.

@there_is_no_if @SpannersReady But let’s turn the tables here, show me the evidence (not reportedly, not rumour, not some post in X or Threads) that provides enough discussion to investigate further? If the car passes scrutineering then it’s legal. Show me it isn’t, then we can talk about what happens next.

@davidpatrick @SpannersReady Yet Merc PU is reportedly not within the defined rules. It's just that the FIA don't have the right way of testing/enforcing it. But that doesn't suddenly make the PU legal. They got found out, like Ferrari did back in 2019, and will likely have to deal with it sooner than later.
