@NathanpmYoung You think it's odd that people have strong views about a high-salience political issue? This is just selection on the dependent variable

@dubitaniel I think it’s odd that a hyper specific geopolitical view is such a strong value apart from the specific discussion of that geopolitical situation.

i already tweeted about this but to reiterate: ya the avg IQ is reported as upper 120's. this is really high; i think this is a mix of people being more likely to report IQs if they are high, of people misremembering/rounding up (e.g. older people report higher IQs), and also that you're way more likely to get IQ tested as a kid if people notice you're smart. And the survey did try to hone in on it being official and not a random online test. The question people got was "Have you ever had an officially administered IQ test", and IF they say yes, then I give them a second question asking "what was the score on that test?" Imo if you test a random sample of the population they're likely to be close to 100 distribution; if you ask the distribution of *people who have gotten IQ tested voluntarily* it is going to be very unusually high. It'd be weird if it *were* 100-centered!

If buses hadn't been invented yet, and the reasons you're against Waymo would also imply banning buses, they're bad reasons.

@microfounded Oh nvm I misread your post, my bad. I want to agree but I think there are multiple sources of bias here (misreporting + selection)

Wonder how many respondents on that survey answered “Have you had an officially administered IQ test?” in the affirmative because of this specific Open Psychometrics test with a big red disclaimer

@Aella_Girl I agree there was probably selection bias related to both the sample and the item. But also the "officially administered IQ test" wording is likely to be misunderstood and of course people tend to inflate estimates of their own intelligence.

@Aella_Girl I don't think it's that big a deal that there was an item with those issues in your survey. I do think it was unwise for you to respond, in your capacity as a researcher, to the question "what's the lowest IQ fetish?" with a summary table when you knew the issues with the data

@Aella_Girl None of the efforts I've seen to capture intelligence with self-report estimates in the literature have performed very well and I imagine most survey methodologists would have advised against using the item in the first place
