@ThyPaddyDaddy @logistrix This makes absolutely no sense.
Can things happen contrary to how god knew they would when he set things up? If no then what you are labelling as "free will" is completely illusory. Free will is being unconstrained from necessary or fate.
English

@ThyPaddyDaddy @logistrix "Just like knowing the sun will rise tomorrow doesn’t cause it to rise"
It WOULD mean you caused it if you were the author of the universe who set up the sun to work like that
It's the COMBINATION of being the one to set everything up AND omniscience that confirms causation
English

I think that’s where we’re talking past each other a bit. In the Orthodox view, God’s knowledge isn’t the same as causation. God can know what we will freely choose without forcing those choices. Just like knowing the sun will rise tomorrow doesn’t cause it to rise.
God didn’t create evil or determine our sins; He created beings with real freedom, and love requires that freedom. The fact that God knows the outcome doesn’t mean He caused it, otherwise foreknowledge would equal coercion, which doesn’t follow.

I bookmarked this to respond later …
Like atheists, Agnostics do not believe in God either , which is why Agnosticism and atheism aren’t mutually exclusive because they’re answering different questions. And it’s very important to know these things if you are against atheism.
Atheism addresses belief….“Do you believe a god exists?”, while agnosticism addresses knowledge…“Do you claim to know whether a god exists?”
You can consistently say “I don’t believe” and at the same time “I don’t know,” and that position …”agnostic atheism”… is actually where most atheists fall. There’s no contradiction here because belief and knowledge operate at different levels… belief is about what you accept as true, while knowledge implies a stronger claim of justified certainty. You don’t need certainty to withhold belief,,,in fact, we do this all the time in everyday reasoning.
Once you see that distinction clearly, atheism stops looking like a bold claim and starts looking like the default rational stance. When someone aserts that a god exists, they’re making a positive claim about reality, and the reasonable response is to ask for evidence before accepting it. If that evidence isn’t provided, withholding belief isn’t dogmatic or stupid , it’s exactly what we do with any unsupported claim.
You don’t belive something first and then wait for evidence…you wait for evidence and then form belief. Atheism, in this sense, is just the consistent application of that principle.
By contrast, theism(which religious people hold) carries a much heavier burden because it doesn’t just posit that something exists, it usually makes specific claims… that a god exists, that this god has intentions, communicates what it wants from us, intervenes, inspires books , reveal itself to people in caves , had a son etc .
Each added detail increases the burden of proof and implausibility of theism and yet these claims typically rely on tradition, revelation, or “personal experience” rather than independently verifiable evidence.
Deism, on the other hand, makes a more minimal claim…a non-intervening creator…which reduces its burden compared to theism, but it still asserts the existence of an entity without direct evidence, so it remains speculative.
when you line it all up, agnostic atheism comes out as the most epistemically grounded position…it avoids overreaching claims, aligns with how we evaluate evidence everywhere else, and simply withholds belief until there’s sufficient justification. It’s not claiming certainty…it’s just refusing to pretend certainty where there isn’t any…🙂

Agnosticism is a more honest stance in my opinion

@dasnielsenson @AtheistPhoenix Why would I pay you for anything? You're the one who's making unsubstantiated claims and was called out for it. You would think you would want to provide the evidence to maintain your integrity, but maybe that's not so important to you.
Embarrassing
English

@escJB @AtheistPhoenix nah, I just don't need to impress people with my intellectual breakdown of the obvious to feel good about myself
usually people need to pay for a tutor when they struggle with basic reality
if you wanna pay me and call me master, I can show you 🤷♂️
English

Humans did not invent the plague, smallpox, cancer
The choices are
1) your god invented them
2) your god doesn’t exist, and life evolved and these pathogens filled niches
Rich in Christ ☘@Rich_In_Christ_
@AtheistPhoenix God never invented any diseases. Every problem was brought by Humanity.
English

@escJB @AtheistPhoenix well because I'm having an open discussion, not an eristic debate where I feel the need to "win"
that's your ego clouding your perception of reality
you're the one so terrified that God exists that you obsessively need to dismiss the source to keep your sanity 🤣
English

@escJB @RealMaxit Type in is it widely held by physicists that time began with the big bang and most places will point to yes and then explain
English

I committed suicide in 2015. I drank a 5th of whiskey, a bottle of wine while downing 30 serequel pills and 20 clonopin pills.
While I was waiting to pass out and never wake up, a voice told me "Michael. call 911" I was almost incoherent in my thoughts. The voice was insistent now "Michael, call 911". I never talked to myself in the 3rd person. It was weird.
I looked at my hand. The phone was there. I was never a phone person. I don't know where it came from. I dialed 911.
I explained to the person I had done the pills and drink. She asked if I could make it to the door. I said I could. I walked to the door and went outside. There was a police car driving up at that same moment.
It was as if it was meant to happen. He asked for my ID. I gave it to him. Then I was gone. I remember a little about being transferred to an ambulance.
I woke in a hospital bed 2 days later. I was happy. I could not understand it. I was happy. I felt good. I was telling jokes and having a good talk with the hospital staff as they were getting me ready to be transferred to a mental hospital.
I finally understood how the Lord saved me. I have never been the same, since. I can't explain it. I was saved and saved. I am not worthy but I was spared hell. I got healthy. I went from 250lbs to 170. I read my bible. My non military PTSD was a thing I could deal with without pharma.
I now take no meds. So, here I am, alone, no need for social appeasement. Only to gather the lay of the land and make dumb posts, sometimes. May you all be blessed as I have been. Thank you, Lord.
English

@TheNewCatholic @RealMaxit And if you want to claim your point was truth, go ahead and provide some evidence. Where has the consensus of physicists indicated the big bang to be the instantiation of time, space & matter? Cite it.
English

@TheNewCatholic @RealMaxit Wtaf are you on about?
This is a survey of 151 participants of a physics conference held in Copenhagen in 2024.
All of the physicists polled would have knowledge over the same evidence. These answers are their interpretations on which is the best current understanding
English

@dasnielsenson @AtheistPhoenix If you want to argue it's a mistranslation from the original language than that's a different point entirely. But so far you haven't done anything to substantiate that.
English

@escJB @AtheistPhoenix deconstruction theory shows that language consists of entirely arbitrary and constantly evolving intersubjectivity that rarely offers direct translation between languages
none of Abrahamism was developed in English
so it carries that English translation messes up concepts
English

@dasnielsenson @AtheistPhoenix We do speak the same language. You just don't appear to know what some words mean.
English

@escJB @AtheistPhoenix if words had fixed meanings across all languages, we would all naturally speak the same language
instead there are thousands of dictionaries and even more social connotations, regulated by social pressure, not the truth of words having explicit meaning
English

@TheNewCatholic @RealMaxit Get fucked you liar

English

@escJB @RealMaxit It is the consensus of all physicists and utilising all the logic snd scientific analysis that tbey have peformed. The evidence over the years has only grown larger. It's excesising what is most likely and the only reasonable explanation we have. And it is a beautiful, good thing

@hawkes_gaye @RealMaxit No god has ever been demonstrated to exist.
You are the one that needs to reconcile why he supposedly intervenes for a suicide but not starved kids. If it requires a non-mocking heart, why don't YOU ask him and report back to me sweetie?
English

@escJB @RealMaxit I don't know. Why don't you ask God yourself. He might surprise you and answer your question, but don't bother if you've got a mocking heart.
English

@AtheistPhoenix this is just a misunderstanding of omnipotence tho
it's "all-powering" not "all-powerful"
the difference being that God is the engine of the universe with a limited capacity for influence, not some all-controlling programmer
English

@cinnamonstickz_ @TheBigMoon67 @FightStorage Yes it's a big transformation, but it was caused by developing bad habits in the first place.
I don't think anyone deserves respect for merely finally achieving what most people do, however big that jump was. Especially given the context she caused the initial problem
English

@escJB @TheBigMoon67 @FightStorage I highly doubt the majority of people loose 3 people worth of weight changing their entire lifestyle.
Thats a gigantic transformation man? You think she just took an ozempic, and just got rid of 500 pounds?
English

@cinnamonstickz_ @TheBigMoon67 @FightStorage Erm, ok? So she's doing now what the vast majority of normal people do. Does everyone deserve respect for generally sticking to 3 meals a day and exercising every now and again?
English

@escJB @TheBigMoon67 @FightStorage Because she went through a gigantic body transformation and her entire routines and lifestyle has changed? Its like 500 pounds that she lost
English

@darwintojesus Ironically it's the other way around.
"Old atheism" is weak, bc the position can't be supported with evidence
"New atheism" is strong, bc the tentative position is the most rational position in absence of any evidence for any affirmative position on the topic
