“The thought that has haunted me while writing these works—that it is not human beings who will be my most conscientious readers—is indeed full of bitter irony”

Psychological horror movie about a man who looks at himself every day in the mirror and slowly realizes he is inexorably becoming a comb-the-hair-straight-back guy

@L0m3z You can tell exactly why and how much he earnestly loves culture and the human spirit because by contrast he shows you what they are like when very specific aspects of them are removed with surgical precision

My Cormac McCarthy take is that he’s a very funny writer and the cruel—worse than cruel, indifferent—and senseless Gnostic void into which he’s pulling you all becomes human and warm and full of meaning once you find the humor in it.

@SandyofCthulhu I was told by more than one West Virginian that they needed a public service ad campaign to tell people to not put Mountain Dew in their toddler's sippy cups.

Clear back in the 1980s a national news team decided to do an exploration of Hunger in America and went to Appalachia, rural George, etc. looking for hunger. They found none. Zip. There WERE and ARE malnourished kids, but it's not because there's a lack of available food - it's because the adults in their lives don't prepare it for them. Kids with dysfunctional adults have it tough, but the solution isn't "provide more food" or at least that's the shortest-term solution imaginable.
Sassafrass84@Sassafrass_84

I'm seriously confused on how children are still going hungry in American schools? Our schools in Florida give every single child breakfast and lunch free. They even give kids baskets of food to take home on the weekends when there is no school. During summer they send food baskets. Why are children still going hungry? (Yes, I know this is on the parents. But our schools take care of these children. So why isn't this happening in other states?)

It's probably a good thing that I will get too old before it becomes possible to really freebase nostalgia, like just "Spotify, shuffle on repeat a playlist of what KSPC 88.7 was playing in 1994"

@christopherrufo Both of those books are essential in large part because they disprove Maslow's hierarchy: The starving and brutalized still seek dignity and self-actualization. This however isn't even the biggest reason those books are needed today: We have forgotten about societal entropy.

I read the first hundred pages of The Road last year, and read the first hundred pages of Blood Meridian this year, and in both instances, gave up, because the books never clicked. Lyrical writing, but the characters are reduced to way down Maslow's hierarchy, and the tone is so relentlessly bleak, with almost no humanity breaking through, it was difficult to feel anything besides the flint clicking against the cold steel in the overwhelming darkness. I know many of you love it, but to me, it's overwrought, overstylized, and overhyped.

About to start Blood Meridian for the first time. Give me all your best advice.

@sgodofsk The people behind that narrative were simply disappointed that she didn't look like a 12-year-old boy, for reasons of their own

@pdrmnvd @Miles_Brundage My particular pain point is that I’m limited to using a Vertex server for work and we’re at least 5 months behind on both the models and cc versions. Don’t know if you have any ability to increase adoption rate for providers of secure servers but it’s definitely a pain point.

I'm a bit worried Anthropic has an org-wide case of AI psychosis that makes them think Claude is good enough that they can ship random product features without breaking things, but in fact they *do* keep breaking things, and they're not online enough to notice people complaining

all worms can obey, with the appropriate stimulus and we wouldn’t ask of a worm what a worm cannot every worm is the apex of virtue, if obedience is the highest virtue why would a worm desire to be more than a worm, if a worm is appropriately rewarded

It’s silly for anyone to think the world would be better if everyone was just like them. Of course we need all sorts of different people; I recognize the world would fail if all had my limited abilities. What we need is a diverse population that does everything the *way* I want.

@Duderichy seems paradoxical but yes one can hold these two ideas in their head at the same time: 1) The obligation to respect and care for others applies universally to everyone (including you) 2) You are not entitled to others' respect or care (even from those subject to the obligation)
