The video game discourse on here is opening my mind to just how people's brains work different than mine because I had no idea that people play (or I guess don't play) games just to be a part of the fandom, the fandom is the very last thing on my mind when I want to play a game

@Apuru_kun Ya I agree. Games so expensive now that experimentation and out of the box design is a liability. This spiritually looks like something you'd see in the 90s, throwing a bunch of cool ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks. Get more excited when I see 7/10s than I do 9s lol

@majuular But honestly... I think the impressive thing, to me, is that I'm struggling to say what the game is, because it's incorporating so many mechanics and gameplay modes. People are pointing to this as a flaw--like it lacks focus--but I think that's the Zelda/Ultima magic at work.

Based on what I've read - Many interacting systems - Unbalanced - Focus on verisimilitude - Technical mess - High lvl of interactivity - Kitchen sink world - Sorta kinda an RPG but not really - Never know if you're going the right way Close enough, welcome back Ultima 7

@Apuru_kun I hope it's fun. Seems like some people are put off by the jank, but you don't see these sorts of systems driven games very often anymore so I think I'll give it a try.

@VerySlowRaptor @UnderTheMayo Agree, there are definitely exceptions. If you watch all routes of a VN you may as well have played it. But for most games, interactivity is a mechanism through which the intended emotional effect is delivered. Its at least worth making a distinction between the 'fan' categories.

@majuular @UnderTheMayo If being a "real" fan means you need to play said game. That implies the game mechanics are an important piece of the whole in every game. However this isn't the case. Some game's art and storytelling are 90% of the experience

@Felmendorf @UnderTheMayo Good question...certainly some kind of delineation. A player could be growing to love the world of Skies, but find their experience poisoned by the high encounter rate. The annoyance could have a knock-on effect that a passive observer wouldn't understand, creating a disconnect-

@keirburrows @UnderTheMayo Good point. Though I think the method of engagement for, say, a sports fan necessarily implies spectatorship. There's a distinction between "I'm a Football fan" and "I'm a fan of Italian food". There's a gradient in between, and I'm not sure where video games exist on it.

@TheOrcosaurusVT Unfortunately software that makes games look worse will now be used as an excuse for big companies to put even less work into optimization. The silver lining is that nobody will be able to afford a gaming PC soon, so it's a nonstarter anyway.

@majuular This makes the game look so much worse. It’s amazing how „AI“ does absolutely nothing apart from making everything effectively worse. This might be the biggest scam the tech industry has ever pulled on humanity.

Plot twist - Majuular only covers older games because he's actually in the past and they're still new for him. His only connection with us is through a magic phone that shows him the dire future of gaming About 10-15 years ago this would have absolutely been some YouTubers bio

@majuular P.S. happy to snail mail you a copy if the US/CA version isn't the same and I can find a copy at a newsagent still (it's become such a rarity to find magazines in the wild outside of subscriptions)

@AbsenceOfGravit @YungJunko I agree that his definition of art is rigid. But the overarching point here is that stylistic and mechanical choices are artistic choices. Remakes have a tendency to overwrite those choices in the name of wider appeal or playability, which disregards original artistic intent.

@kurriochi @YungJunko I had a completely different experience and takeaway from the video. He plays devil's advocate quite a bit for the sake of dialectic, which I guess you could interpret as derogatory if you went into the video with that mindset. But his final statement is pretty even handed.

@majuular @YungJunko When I got up to that point in the video I have to say, considering how the rest of the video is, I'm not sure I'd lean on the earnest interpretation. Either way, it was tacked onto a meandering video where so many of its points railroad you into the derogatory interpretation.

@kurriochi @YungJunko As someone who puts together PS1-style renders for lots of my videos, I'll echo the sentiment: yes, lots of solo developers choose it because it's an attainable art style. That doesn't devalue it in any way.

@majuular @YungJunko He also basically shits on a ton of indie developers by suggesting the reason they picked PS1 style graphics is to look more old or weird rather than it being a stylistic choice the developers made because they wanted to do it.
