BREAKING 💥 FTX’s prior stake in Anthropic (if not sold) would now be worth over $30 Billion. FTX made a roughly $500M dollar investment into Anthropic in 2021, securing an ownership stake that was initially around 13.5% and later diluted to about 8%. At the time, Anthropic was valued at only a few billion dollars and the broader market had not yet recognized the potential of generative AI. The company was founded by former OpenAI researchers and quickly positioned itself as a serious competitor focused on building advanced and safety oriented AI systems. After FTX collapsed in 2022, its bankruptcy estate was forced to sell off assets to repay creditors. In 2024, FTX sold its Anthropic stake for approximately $1.3 to $1.4 billion dollars, generating a modest return of around two to three times the original investment. While this was a positive outcome on paper, the sale happened before the explosive growth in AI valuations that followed, meaning the firm exited far earlier than ideal. Today, Anthropic is valued at roughly $380 billion dollars, which would put FTX’s former stake at an estimated $25 to $30 billion dollars. That implies a missed gain of well over $20 billion dollars and a potential return exceeding fifty times the initial investment. Had FTX been able to hold the position, this single bet could have covered its bankruptcy shortfall many times over and would likely be considered one of the most successful venture investments in recent history.
