Still find the divergence between the gold trend and open interest in the (US) futures market striking. Obviously there is a strong Chinese element, as shown in the Shanghai data today. But still a very interesting departure from what is normal. Open interest (white) normally follows price (yellow).
What happens to open interest if we trade back to the high?

1955 was a very good year. Bill Gates also born that year.
And lesser known, me.

@BarrySchwartzBW LT, how do you view agi—effect on employment, retraining, wealth distribution, potential for universal basic income. Is it likely and possibly sooner than later?

Two years of double digit returns in a row after a terrible year in 2022. When you average out the three year return you see more normalized returns (at least for our clients) more or less in line with long-term returns for stocks and bonds. Yes, many are worried that we are due for a correction or significant pullback. No arguments there, it will happen at some point. The questions are: How much down? What stocks will do the worst? How fast will it happen, How long will it last? And then of course there will be a recovery and those same questions apply on the upside. As usual we are sticking with quality investments and thinking and acting long-term.

It’s very clear that the Premier doesn’t think that Pierre Poilievre is going to win the next federal election if she is tying us up in court for so many years on yet another unwinnable court case.
I’m no lawyer, but the Supreme Court has ruled that the carbon tax is constitutional. Certainly, the federal government really dropped the ball in creating the carve out for home heating oil. I don’t know why they thought that was a good idea. They absolutely undermined the consumer carbon tax in a very big way.
But again, instead of making a deal with the federal government, instead of talking about an exemption for natural gas or even more rebate money going to people in Alberta who want to get off home heating oil, the UCP government just chooses to fight.
The most telling part of the Premier’s press conference today was when she was asked if she talked to the federal government and her response was essentially, “Why would I do that?”
This Premier doesn’t want to win, she just wants to fight. So, she wants to drag out a court case for as many years as she can so she can show she is fighting.
But here is what is clear, Alberta has the highest unemployment rate outside of the Maritimes under this UCP government. The only job creation this UCP government is interested in is jobs for lawyers in unwinnable court cases.
Why would she time this pointless announcement on another fight with the federal government for today?
Could it have anything to do with her leadership review on Saturday?

@BarrySchwartzBW So can you share companies you think capable of being on this list over the next 10 years

Here are some companies on the TSX that have compounded at 15% or more before reinvested dividends since Jan 1 2010.

Americans are eating our lunch.
Texas, South Dakota, and other Republican states are investing in renewable energy. This isn’t about left vs. right. It’s about success vs. failure.
Renewable energy job creators are deciding where they’re going next.
We need to make sure Alberta is open for business.
If you have thoughts on this you’d like to share, send us a message using the link below. We want to hear from you.

I think there will be a lot of wood to chop to get through this - stock will bounce around for a while - but unless something really falls off the rails, the dividend will hold things up and I think there is opportunity here for value and discipline and maybe something special.

@fhoro 4. My sense is that the reaction is overdone, and 8.3% divvy is safe and tempting. So I bought more at $44.68 around my l.t. historical cost (owned since 2004). Will mgt and activist owners convince the market of their strategy?
