@DorothyMcCabe @bikemayorwat @peckproject Very sorry to hear Arcy. My son just identified the bike and rider. We all chatted on a trail recently. The look on a 9yr old's face is something to see as he puts the pieces together, and likely knows it could easily be us. Priorities in a city are so messed.

Bicycle Mayor of Waterloo (Velo Maire de Waterloo)
@s_weldon @peckproject That’s correct Scott. Marshall with traffic lights looks like a “safer” option to cross Weber than the small island near Mackay Crescent (to access Laurel Trail). But the way Weber is designed for fast movement of cars makes crossing it dangerous in either case.

@peckproject By the location of the bike and car, it appears the cyclist was riding west or east on Marshall, crossing with the light, and was hit by motorist driving south on Weber. Weber is a death trap, even when crossing at a signalized intersection.

A wider angle photo shows this happened in an intersection with traffic lights. 5 lanes for vehicles but no room for cycling lanes. Quick fixes: remove the centre turn lane to create bike lanes on each side, reduce 60km/h to 40 & enforce speed limits.

I have to admit something. I usually listen to @TheWarOnCars while I’m driving to my weekly hockey game. Please don’t cancel me.

@josh_orita @RegionWaterloo @citywaterloo I ride here weekly with my kids. We see the sign knocked down a few times per month. Kids now call the sign Flat Stanley. One of the most dangerous crossings we have to navigate. Thank you 4-lane roads in #autoloo ☠️

@bromptonymous We had an awesome ride up to Swartz Bay 2 yrs ago. Route was spectacular. Very cool to roll past long lines of traffic and easily board ferry, always let off first! We did NOT camp! Good luck. Next level. 🚴‍♂️❤️

@RescueEwe @AllKidsBike Awesome work! When I taught Kindergarten we did games like slowest race and bike tag; great for teaching balance

Our school started the @AllKidsBike program this week! I was able to volunteer with the kids and they are having a blast! Balance bikes are the way. 🚲

@s_weldon It could be better but I, for one, would be pretty damn happy if every street looked like the new King St

@m_druker True. But in a calmed streetscape like Uptown, being left in the middle of the road is still being treated like a pile of 💩 by our engineers. They should understand this by now. Caroline was the first botch for peds. The rest of King is botch #2.

@s_weldon There's no raised mid-block crossings but there are a few median islands clearly intended for crossings

@josh_orita I don't wear a helmet while driving on the 401, but probably would driving on a race track. I don't often wear a helmet on urban trails, I do in a bike race. Maybe a comparison for our motoring culture?

@josh_orita Agree. Ever since I started riding more upright bikes to commute, my speed is slower and desire to wear a helmet is lower. My route is biggest deciding factor. Imagine pedestrians were shamed into strapping a styrofoam hat to their head. How many ppl would still desire to walk?

This morning, in Bay Village, OH. Do we have any schools in @wrdsb or @WCDSBNewswire that look like this right now? Note the fence that doubles well as a bike rack! 😮 Note how many bikes aren't even locked! 😮😮 Our partners @cyclewr would be proud!
