I know this isn't the airport and I don't need to announce my departure... but I'm taking a break from Twitter. Elon Musk's ill-informed and irresponsible comments about the UK have made me uncomfortable being here. Currently I'm checking out BlueSky: bsky.app/profile/techni…

@kelvmackenzie Yes that's pretty wild. I think many don't realise how high the pension contributions are for your local council workers. When your council tax is going up year by year by ridiculous levels; look at how much is pension contributions. It's crazy!

Struggling to stay on top of developments in technical SEO? I'd recommend taking a look at Tech SEO Tips newsletter. The fact that this week's edition mentions one of my articles only serves to highlight what an excellent resource it is ;)

SEO question! I have a client with inbound links to a non-canonical version of a page. Is Google smart enough to attribute the link equity to the canonical version of the page?

Anyone used the "codeless" ad units in Google Ad Manager (GAM)? Do I still need to define the slot in the Google Publisher Tag, or are they completely codeless?

Every day's a school day when you're self-employed. Nearly four years in, I've just had to generate my first 'statement of account' for a client. Until now it's just been invoices. Have I levelled up my accounting game?!

@RegSimpkin A big chunk of those interest payments are made to the Bank of England, which holds gilts (government bonds). The BoE is state-owned so those payments never leave the public sector

One of the delights of being self-employed and paying HMRC every six months is seeing this summary of where public spending goes. This is to 5 April 2023. Approximately £1 in every £8 is on interest on borrowing.

@alanefuller Yeah, it looks like it has changed - we don't have a business phone number and the other option is to create a video of your premises showing the office and a sign to it etc., which doesn't exist in our case. I remember receiving a card in the post years ago.

Digital companies: Have you managed to get verified on Google Business? I can't verify because we're not based at our registered address (which is our accountant in the UK) and you need to upload a video proving your location. This means I can't respond to Google reviews etc.

Signed up for a very well known automation service on Friday afternoon using a work email address. Logged back in this morning to find nine emails from them! OK, you automate your email campaigns too, I get it - but everything in moderation please

@garicgymro Depends on the chocolate. Smarties, Maltesers etc are both chocolate and sweets (candy). A bar of Dairy Milk is chocolate but not sweets.

Two of my kids are debating whether chocolate (as in a chocolate bar) is a kind of candy. My feeling is that it feels like a different category. I also wonder if Americans might be more likely to consider it candy than Europeans. Does this seem right or is it just me?

@EJWoolf I think the idea is that you praise specific actions instead. “That was a kind thing to do”. It probably stems from the notion that kids make good/bad choices rather than being intrinsically good/bad themselves

Sorry, but another parent just told me I should avoid saying things like 'good boy' and 'clever boy' and 'what a strong little chap' etc. But why? I'm clear about his identity, and he's happy to be praised, and to feel strong and capable in this world

I'll be watching closely to see what devolution really means for Carshalton & Wallington. We want the London Mayor to invest properly in public transport in our borough. Me on ITV Late Debate 👇🏼
