While it IS an example of gov inefficiency, the food cart situation is much more complex than people on here are making it out to be: Almost all the food carts in LA are illegal and don't meet health standards The purpose of this program is to replace those with ones that are more sanitary Previously, it was physically impossible for food carts to meet the legal requirements Much to their credit, Kounkuey (yes, the La Sombrita people) pointed this out and got the county and state to change laws to fix this They and others have now successfully designed carts that meets new, feasible standards. But right now those carts are prohibitively expensive ($7,500) It appears like this contract has been horribly mismanaged and a bunch of time and money was wasted on unnecessary public outreach. But saying the county should just buy and distribute off-the-shelf food carts is completely missing the point.
