40-60 % of Israels oil imports come from Azerbaijan via BTC but Iran instead of targeting them and choking Israel would prefer attacking Arab states. Because Irans actions are not based upon any anti-Israel Islamic ideology but rather its own personal interests and hegemony in the ME.

Everyone knows my theological (jurisprudential and ideological) disagreements with him. However, he is absolutely right about this. Iran created the perfect storm and it has to now ride the lightning. You cannot be serious about fighting Israel while you are fighting ALL of your neighbors as well (including those that share borders with Israel). This strategy is WRONG. Furthermore the geopolitical situation at present does not favor the desired outcome. It’s just like the Syrian resistance that started prematurely and only succeeded when Russia and Iran had their backs against the wall in Ukraine and Israel respectively. It is all about: (a) building your capacity; (b) waiting for the opportune geopolitical conditions; and (c) timing your strategy to perfection. You get one of these wrong and failure awaits you on the other side of any conflict.

Interests vis-à-vis Ideologies
1. The Periphery Doctrine
a. The periphery doctrine was a strategic idea developed in the early years of Israel by David Ben Gurion.
b. The logic behind it was simple. Israel was surrounded by hostile Arab states. So instead of trying to break into Arab States, Israel should ally with non-Arab or peripheral powers.
c. The “Peripheral” partners were Iran, Turkey and Ethiopia.
2. Pre 1979 as part of the Periphery doctrine, Iran and Israel continued with intelligence and military cooperation including Oil exports under the shared fear of Arab nationalism (especially Gamal Abdel Nasser).
3. Post 1979, "on paper" the Iranian revolution flipped Iran into an ideologically anti Israel state.
4. However, the backchannel cooperation between Iran and Israel never fully stopped. But once again under the shared threat preception from "Iraq" and "Saddam Hussein", Iran and Israel revived the "Periphery Doctrine".
5. Israel resumed buying Iranian oil (2 million barrels amounting to 36 million USD) while also ensuring the release of IDF POWs from Lebanon.
6. Iran was economically devastated, politically isolated and faced an existensional threat (common with Israel) from Iraq.
7. Survival became more important than ideology for Iran. Under the pragmatic approach and quiet diplomacy of leaders like Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Iran-Israel mutual co-opersrion thrived under the guise of Islamic Idelology.

The economic shockwaves triggered by Iran in retaliation could reverberate across global markets, inflicting damage so profound that any strategic gains would be sharply diminished. Both sides are acutely aware of this calculus. Washington understands the cost of escalation while Tehran understands the leverage of disruption. OBL committed 9/11 with the excuse that it would expel US forces from the Arabian Peninsula and Muslim lands. The exact opposite happened. Iran’s actions are doing the exact same. Should we descend into another round of violence, American (and NATO) presence will only increase in the Middle East.
