Remembering Ronald Lee Ermey 🫡 We honor American actor and retired U.S. Marine Corps drill instructor, best known for his iconic, no-holds-barred performance as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick's 1987 film Full Metal Jacket. Born on March 24, 1944, in Emporia, Kansas, Ermey grew up on a farm and had a rebellious youth before enlisting in the Marines in 1961 at age 17. He served for 11 years (1961–1972), including time as a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, 14 months in Vietnam with Marine Wing Support Group 17, and two tours in Okinawa, Japan. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was later granted the honorary rank of Gunnery Sergeant by the Corps. Injuries led to his medical retirement. He passed away on April 15, 2018, at age 74 in Santa Monica, California, from complications of pneumonia. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery
