A THREAD on gender and how we construct identity. --> Relying exclusively on biology-based arguments for defining identity is what white and male supremacists do. Which tells me all I need to know about that thinking. /1

Parents more uncomfortable with gender-nonconforming behaviors in boys, study finds. Another example of how boys get policed back into the man box, even when it comes from a place of presumed good intent psypost.org/2019/04/parent…

@Wheadon_SwaineM @RemakingManhood That last bit does reads bit as though challenging organizational structures that disadvantage women and promoting the success of the organization are inherently different and perhaps even mutually exclusive- which they are very much not!

@RemakingManhood And yes, we are all equally responsible for perpetuating the status quo, and all likewise have an opportunity and an obligation to be a part of writing a new script. Women are not exempt from that.

@AlixPollack YES. Retrogressive ideas of man box culture are internalized by men AND women. "Research reveals that men perceived as less self-promoting and more collaborative and power-sharing are evaluated by both men and women as less competent (and less masculine)." hbr.org/2018/10/how-me…

@RemakingManhood 100%. Man box culture is as much the things men are told they can’t be as it is the things they are supposed to be. And principal among that is to avoid all things deemed feminine! Layer on that gender equity is viewed as a “women’s thing” and it’s no wonder some men stay silent

@RemakingManhood Both in so much as the risks being considered are often deeply intertwined with man box culture - policing behaviors that put men’s social and political capital on the line and threaten their status as a man and among other men.

@AlixPollack It’s not difficult to agree with women saying “come on and stand up, men.” That the risks men take in challenging workplace sexism is minor compared to the workplace abuse women face every day. The question is are men simply risk averse or are we traumatized by man box culture?

@RemakingManhood Absolutely! A previous report in this series had 86% of men reporting being committed to interrupting sexism but only 31% reporting feeling confident that they could - in large measure because the culture around them was silencing.

@AlixPollack Thanks for sharing this powerful research, Alix. It's chilling to realize that this is exactly the purpose of our bullying dominance-based culture of masculinity. To suppress the voices of millions of men who would otherwise speak out against sexist and racist workplace abusers.

From the data: In highly combative work cultures–those with ruthless competition and an emphasis on work over family–men are more likely to experience #MasculineAnxiety, and the more masculine anxiety men feel, the less likely they are to challenge sexism. catalyst.org/reports/mascul…

In workplaces with a highly combative culture, 61% of men said they would do nothing in response to sexism, compared to 12% of men who work in less combative workplaces.

A few sobering stats to highlight: The vast majority (76%) of men who experience high degrees of masculine anxiety said that they would do nothing in response to sexism, compared to only 14% of men who experience less anxiety about their masculinity

4 months ago I had the pleasure of talking with @justinbaldoni at #TheMARCSummit about his experience of undefining masculinity. Today his book landed on my doorstep and I couldn’t be more excited to dig in! #ManEnough
