Without the Electoral College: California… New York… Chicago… Los Angeles… would dominate presidential elections while smaller states and rural Americans become politically irrelevant. The system forces candidates to build geographically broad coalitions across the country instead of campaigning only in dense population hubs. And another thing: Democrats are suddenly allergic to constitutional systems the moment those systems stop guaranteeing their preferred outcome. That’s not constitutional principle.
