Excited that my paper “Parents, Infants, and Voter Turnout” is now out (and open access) in @QJPS! I provide some of the first evidence on how having an infant affects turnout in the U.S. Here are the coefficients on child age from a linear probability model of female turnout:

@PastoorIsabel I actually don’t find a significant effect at age -1. I argue this provides evidence that the effect is coming from having young children rather than from baseline turnout differences between parents and non-parents.

@slungaardmumma Since many couples vote together, the bump up in fathers’ turnout could also mostly be driven by mothers.

@slungaardmumma Thanks for asking! It is hard to pin down. There is also a bump up for fathers when children reach school age. If fathers are less time constrained, it suggests investment in public services may be important.

How can policy address this gap? Using reforms in Oregon and Washington and a triple-difference strategy, I show that the introduction of universal vote-by-mail substantially increases new mothers’ relative turnout! See the full paper here: nowpublishers.com/article/Detail….
