Have a busy schedule? Early voting is one way to make sure you can still advocate for your community. #ElectionDay is approaching fast. Don’t let a packed schedule keep you from voting. Find out if, where, and how you can vote early in your state: v.vot-er.org/social-gotv #VotER

Hey @DavidsonCollege! It’s 8:47 AM ET on Nov 8, 2022, have you voted yet? If you’re registered at 209 Ridge Rd, vote at Davidson K-8. Go to Main Street, take a left. When you get to FlatIron, take the left fork onto South St. Keep walking until you see DK-8 on your left.

I waited to post my first ever tweet until I could say that all of my dissertation papers are officially published or accepted. Today is the day! Links/summary below:

A 🧵about "The Gender Gap in Self-Promotion," my paper with @christine_exley that is coming out in the #QJE. We give subjects a math and science test. First, they guess their score. We then ask them subjective questions about how well they think they did on the test. 1/n

7.9K jobs were added in childcare. That is way too little to close the enormous gap that remains in childcare services.

It's hard to capture in words just how grateful I am to see this in print. And I'm grateful to the countless mentors, friends, & loved ones who've supported me along the way. A bit on what this work means to me and what I hope it can mean to the world. 1/7 aeaweb.org/articles?id=10…

@GarrettMAA Interesting! Parents of young kids likely have a greater stake in policy decisions now, but they have even less time! Turnout effects could likely go in either direction.

@AngelaCools @qjps Exciting! Fun to see myself as part of a relatively narrow cohort of society under study. I’m curious to learn about political responses of parents of young kids (esp. <5) in the COVID era. I feel like there are new political cleavages brewing. Any thoughts?

Excited that my paper “Parents, Infants, and Voter Turnout” is now out (and open access) in @QJPS! I provide some of the first evidence on how having an infant affects turnout in the U.S. Here are the coefficients on child age from a linear probability model of female turnout:

@PastoorIsabel I actually don’t find a significant effect at age -1. I argue this provides evidence that the effect is coming from having young children rather than from baseline turnout differences between parents and non-parents.

@AngelaCools @qjps Interesting! Would you interpret this as pregnancy potentially dampening women’s voter turnout?

@slungaardmumma Since many couples vote together, the bump up in fathers’ turnout could also mostly be driven by mothers.

@slungaardmumma Thanks for asking! It is hard to pin down. There is also a bump up for fathers when children reach school age. If fathers are less time constrained, it suggests investment in public services may be important.

How can policy address this gap? Using reforms in Oregon and Washington and a triple-difference strategy, I show that the introduction of universal vote-by-mail substantially increases new mothers’ relative turnout! See the full paper here: nowpublishers.com/article/Detail….
