Because they’re busier than other places. It’s what people want to buy. You’re putting perception over reality. It’s like saying “How is this luxury airline going busy selling $5000 tickets when Ryanair sells $20 seats” or “how come my local tapas place closed while Greggs are opening up all over the place.” Economic reality beats perception. A vape has a 50% mark up, can be on the shelf for years and I promise they sell a lot. A barber’s has limited operational cost and large margins. Your local framing boutique has one customer a week with a tiny mark up. Stop assuming people are crooked because you look down on the product they’re selling, the people selling it, or the people buying it. When I lived in London my local Turkish barber was always full, always a wait, you paid circa £20-30 for 45 minutes of labour, three seats, from 8-5pm. With product and tips, easily £1000 a day, for a family owned business. Obviously that’s a good day. But I’ve worked in bars in the middle on Leicester Square barely making £200 over those same hours with a cellar to refrigerate, massive stock, and significantly higher costs all round. Does that mean some aren’t dodgy. Of course not. Every business has the potential of being a front. But considering the actual numbers, makes the mystery much less mysterious.
