Did the 49ers MESS UP by drafting RB Kaelon Black at Pick 90? My short answer is NO. I really like his film, I just watched 3 games from 2025 with fresh clips. My questions are not necessarily with the player, it’s how the team will use him. Here’s my all-22 breakdown: + Impressed with his vision. Seems like almost every play he picks the right gap and is able to adapt to blocks as they’re happening. + Awesome working in tight spaces. He has great lateral movement and short area burst, but processes things quickly which allows him to adjust his body as he runs. + Eluded defenders who won into the backfield + Hard runner looking for contact. His legs are ALWAYS churning even when guys are holding his progress. + Never gets knocked back, and there were a lot of plays where he ran someone over. + Indiana ran both gap scheme and zone scheme runs. They ran a lot of tight inside zone and duo, and his vision was consistent with all of them + Great 0-30 speed. Doesn’t need a runway to hit top speed + Loved his contact balance. A lot of plays where he stays on his feet when he should fall or breaks through arm tackles + Pass protection was a pleasant surprise. Square hips, low pad level, and quick to diagnose blitzing LBs + Shared a backfield (less wear and tear) with Roman Hemby and was the most more efficient runner - 24 years old - Caps out after about 30 yards and doesn’t have true home run speed - Didn’t chart a single reception in the 3 games I watched - The way he runs isn’t fluid. He has the short area burst but he often has to keep his whole body upright, making his jump cuts look choppy - He knows what he is seeing but at times I’d like him to be more patient. Sometimes he just drops his head and slams into the hole - Hand placement in pass pro and overall anchor needs technique development (but it’s not bad) - Not sure if he can handle a big workload with his smaller frame - Indiana OL was really good. Some plays they drive the entire DL 2 yards off the ball I really like this player. Definitely see shades of Jordan James. I’ve adjusted my grade to an early 4th round grade. A bit early, but really not that bad. My question is will he see the field? Not sure. That’s the real measure of value here. But if the 49ers plan to use him, I would grade this pick a B-. They ignored better players on the board, but still got a really nice player.

I know it's a wild concept and that many just want to use the draft as an outlet for their anger, but maybe we can actually wait to see how these 49ers' draftees perform in the NFL before grading them. The truth is that you don't know how things will break for these players
