@ShamsCharania It’s pretty simple the league just needs an independent committee. If they suspect tanking open an investigation, if found guilty team loses draft pick and pays massive fine. Could lose next year’s too depending on severity. Solves the problem overnight.

Multiple sources with knowledge of Thursday's GM meeting as well as a late January Competition Committee meeting told ESPN that the following concepts have been discussed to curb tanking: •First-round picks can be protected only top-4 or top-14+ •Lottery odds freeze at the trade deadline or a later date •No longer allowing a team to pick top 4 in consecutive years and/or after consecutive bottom-3 finishes •Teams can’t pick top-4 the year after making conference finals •Lottery odds allocated based on two-year records •Lottery extended to include all play-in teams •Flatten odds for all lottery teams
Shams Charania@ShamsCharania

Commissioner Adam Silver informed the league's 30 general managers on Thursday that the NBA plans to make anti-tanking rule changes for next season, sources tell ESPN. Stakeholders have intensified dialogue about combatting tanking.

@SamQuinnCBS Just have a committee that enforces it. Other teams or league can request a review. If found guilty, draft pick forfeited and big fine. Problem solved.

- A team will tank just as hard to keep a top-4 protected pick as it will to keep a top-8 protected pick. Maybe harder. - If lottery odds freeze at the deadline that just tells teams to start tanking earlier. - If teams can’t pick top-four in consecutive drafts that just incentives more tanking into the middle because there’s suddenly a much cleaner path to a top-four pick with a non-bottom-four record. - If lottery odds are allocated based on two year records then teams will just tank across multiple seasons. Whenever there’s a Wemby on the horizon this stuff will get more egregious than ever. - Adding more lottery teams won’t convince anyone to stop tanking but it will give us some inevitably stupid result like a 47-win team that would’ve won 57 if it were healthier randomly getting a top-four pick. - Any odds flattening just incentivizes tanking from a different portion of the league. There are absolutely teams who would be better-served in the long run taking a 1-in-14 swing in the lottery than getting swept in the first round by the No. 1 seed. Most of these ideas are bad in pretty predictable ways, and then there are always going to be unpredictable problems that only crop up when it’s too late to fix them. Idk what the solution is, but it’s not any of this stuff. Either get more creative and do something truly out of the box or leave it alone and let teams operate as they see fit.

@DanGrazianoESPN Perhaps we need to accept some uncomfortable truths about win % and Super Bowl win rate of minority coaches. We have plenty of data on this but it’s racist to talk about (but somehow not racist to say we aren’t hiring enough black coaches).

@ByMikeJones Generally speaking black coaches have a shown a good ability at the coordinator level (esp. defensive) but the exact “mediocrity” you described when promoted to head coach. They have a worse record and a much lower rate of Super Bowl wins than white coaches (key word rate).

The search for a new GM will go down after the draft. Like most teams in this position, expect a pivot, likely the opposite of what they just had. I’d expect an older school type with a strong scouting background, someone rooted in traditional evaluation and personnel building.

@ChessLiam I don’t think kneeling is sharp, I think essentially falling flat or slightly forward is. Losing any yardage is a bad result. If you can inch forward or neutral it’s probably good for one down, two times is a little dicey IMO as it increases risk of not scoring

Does anyone got the win % difference if the Bills score a touchdown when they did vs. if they successfully complete a kneel down or dive down at the ground for no yards loss? Teams just don’t practice that situation is a big reason Bills just scored, but I would still kneel

@Michael_Moison @ChessLiam He's deadass here. That's a stupid unique team that could definitely spike in SB, and has all its pieces live in the Wild Card. This team is lowkey kind of sick.

Ok, soliciting advice on espresso makers. I want easy, automatic, all in one. I want to hit a button at 4:30am when I’m walking out the door to the airport and be able to drive there with an espresso buzz, whilst my better half can wake and hit a button for an Americano.

4th and inches punt, 3rd and 7 run on the next two possessions at midfield. PJ Fleck genuinely plays the most afraid and dumb brand of football in America
