I was running late for work one Monday morning. Not just "a little late" the kind of late where you brush your teeth while looking for your shoes and somehow end up putting your phone in the refrigerator.
I jumped into my car and sped off.
About five minutes later, I noticed something strange.
A little kid was waving at me.
Then another.
Then another.
Soon, a whole group of children were standing by the road, smiling and waving excitedly.
I felt famous.
I waved back.
The kids cheered.
"Wow," I thought. "People really like me around here."
As I drove farther, more children started running toward the road, waving their backpacks.
One kid actually tried to open my passenger door.
That's when I realized...
My car was bright yellow.
The exact same color as the local school buses.
And thanks to a temporary magnetic sign from a moving company stuck to the side, from a distance it looked suspiciously official.
I laughed and kept driving.
Then I stopped at a red light.
Suddenly...
Knock. Knock. Knock.
A little girl was standing beside my window.
"Are you the new driver?" she asked.
Before I could answer, another kid climbed into my back seat.
Then another.
Then another.
Within thirty seconds, my car had become a kindergarten convention.
The light turned green.
The children were cheering.
One kid shouted, "Take us to school!"
Another yelled, "I call the window seat!"
I had no idea what to do.
So I pulled into a nearby parking lot and called the police.
The officer arrived, looked inside my car, and nearly fell over laughing.
The kids were eating my emergency snacks and arguing about whose turn it was to control the radio.
One boy had somehow found a pair of sunglasses in my glove compartment and was pretending to be the principal.
The officer spent fifteen minutes gathering the runaway passengers and returning them to their parents.
Before leaving, one little boy looked at me sadly and said:
"You were the coolest bus driver ever."
I said, "I'm not a bus driver."
He replied,
"That's exactly what a cool bus driver would say."
To this day, every time I drive through that neighborhood, kids still wave at me.
And one of them still asks why I stopped driving the bus.
I never had the heart to tell him the truth.
Sometimes it's better to let legends live. 😂😂😂

“Women don’t choose bad men. The bad men just seem good at first.”
And sometimes that’s absolutely true.
Manipulative people are often very good at hiding who they really are until they’re deeply invested in the relationship.
But that’s not every situation.
Sometimes the red flags aren’t hidden at all.
Sometimes people knowingly choose someone because they validate their worldview, excuse their behavior, or make them feel powerful.
The uncomfortable truth is that people don’t always fall for the mask.
