In the latest episode of USISPF Conversations, @RHFontaine, CEO of @CNASdc, spoke with @Akshobh of USISPF and discussed the concept of global swing states. In a report released last year, CNAS identified six “global swing states” that will disproportionately influence the future of the international system. The report, Global Swing States and the New Great Power Competition, was authored by CNAS CEO @RHFontaine and researcher @GibbsMckinley, and builds on Fontaine's influential 2012 concept for today’s geopolitical landscape. In a candid chat with USISPF, Fontaine touched on these six nations and their significance in the current geopolitical landscape. He elaborated on the rules-based international order, the impact of trade and tariffs, and the importance of strategic autonomy for countries like India. The discussion also shed light on the role of soft power, the dynamics of manufacturing and supply chains, and the significance of alliances such as the Quad. Fontaine emphasizes the need for the U.S. to engage with these swing states on their own terms and the importance of critical minerals in economic security.
