If they don’t know their costs, and you don’t know their costs, how is it possible for taxpayers, caregivers and patients to get a fair deal ? And the concept of “every other country does it “ ignores the fact that they all converted decades and decades ago, long before you and your peers allowed the extreme vertical integration we face now. Evil landlord in action: We’re building brand new sidewalks at this ancient property that has been neglected for decades. The residents will surely hate the convenience and safety of this addition! This property was also falling apart so badly that it was only 35% occupied in a submarket that desperately needs more housing. While we could have bulldozed it and built new apartments that no one could afford and pushed out the locals, we decided to fix and renovate every unit, replace roofs, windows, parking lots, and effectively all the plumbing. A dastardly deed, indeed! And the most vile thing? We’re doing this gigantic project, all while keeping rents below 25% of household income so it’s affordable for the local folks. World domination plan is going swimmingly, muahahaha.

Weird but actually genuine question but what have these no kings protests achieved? They happen once every 2 months and I don’t even know what the whole goal is of it, maybe aside from trying to cause a decrease in economic activity.

That's probably true, there's nimbys everywhere. Maybe it's more like in cities with rising property values the NIMBYism kicks in really hard as people protect their "investment." Whereas in smaller cities the resistance to new construction isn't as consistently strong, so some of them can get new housing built.

I made this argument a few years back - I called them the “second tier cities” - and I’m glad to see it’s reaching a wider audience These cities mostly avoid the governance problems that seem to plague the major US cities and their amenities now (largely) rival the super stars Unless you need a very specific career, you can do very well basically anywhere now in the US

“You’re on your own.” Are you kidding? Have you seen federal social spending in this country? It’s basically the entire budget, except for the 16 percent we spend on defense. One can oppose spending more without brazenly lying like this.
