Wonder where that happened? I was at school in the fifties with a high proportion of Maori. There was no such exclusion from pools or cinemas. There was exclusion from alcohol service at pubs and clubs, at the request/demand of the local kaumātua/Maori Women’s Welfare League, patrolled by the Wardens. It was generally respected until the Taihape Working Men’s Club broke the rule. The others then followed. Taihape was the last booze town before the southern end of the King Country. That area was (by agreement with the Kingi movement) dry (no alcohol sales) until the Labour government ended the deal (by local legend in return for massive Dominion Breweries election funding). The local MP Paddy Kearins (Labour’s only real farmer MP) crossed the floor to vote with National to require a referendum before alcohol could be sold in the King Country, again to respect the wishes of local Maori leadership. Kearins was deselected by Labour at the next election, when his seat was disestablished.
