@achillghost I remember watching a documentary about this and there was a good quote that, oftentimes in U.S. bases out west, the vastness and unhospitable nature of the land itself is the main deterrent for trespassers trying to access it.

There was a famous case of a group of German tourists going missing in Death Valley after their car broke down. They headed for the China Lake military area on their map, assuming it would be a base as in Europe, not realizing it was 4,400 km of uninhabited desert

It's a semi-regular phenomenon that Europeans fly to the Yukon, walk into the woods and are never seen again. They figure there will eventually be some village where they can stock up on supplies, but the only points on their map are temporary camps that have been abandoned since the Gold Rush.

@CrankyFed I honestly don't have a lot of hope for it. If he intentionally got rid of the "murdering child" as he call her, I have to guess he is not going to be in keeping in the weirder aspects of the book.

@325Dino @moriko38 @kgproject2 I meant more of the cliche of a modern professional army being repeatedly "beaten" in their encounters with particular wildlife. The screaming is interesting, reminds me of cougars often causing mistaken reports of a woman being attacked.

고라니 특유의 울음소리가 처음 듣는사람 입장으로는 사람이 괴성을 내는듯한 소리와 비슷해서 경계근무에 혼동을 주기도 합니다
특히 요즘 징집인원들은 고라니를 직접 본 경험이 거의 없거든요

@fakehistoryhunt I just assumed that, as is done with an upside down horseshoe in other parts of Europe and N. America, it is the Dutch method of warding off evil spirits and witches.
