It wasn't until meeting Meryl and Lee again, reminiscing about The Maiden Theatre Company, that I was reminded that Alan Bates came to see one of my plays The Post Card in Buxton and again in London a couple of years later. He was so lovely and spoke to the cast after the performance and was very encouraging. When I arrived on the set of Gosford Park a few years later he was the first person to say hello and I was impressed he remembered my name and the play! A truly lovely man and a great loss to the profession when he died in 2003. Happy days indeed. #AlanBates #GosfordPark #ThePostcard #BuxtonFestival

The more I read this, the more I realize how it is utterly illiterate. How exactly do you decolonize someone’s birthplace? He lived there. No one came in and conquered his house. It’s just a house of a man that exists. These people are exhausting 🙄

Robert Reich says he wants billionaires to go extinct! That’s economic idiocy. Billionaires get rich by CREATING wealth. They get paid a lot, but still only earn 2% of the value of their companies, economist @danieljmitchell notes. We should want MORE billionaires:

I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to share that I signed a contract today with Corsair (@LittleBrownUK @HachetteUK), who will publish my debut poetry collection in 2028. I’m so grateful to Sarah Castleton for believing in the book, and Kirsty McLachlan for championing it.💐🎉

@Rightanglenews This was incredibly embarrassing. Also the miscalculation on the size of sample cups. Firing my entire publicity team and rethinking my approach to show business. Is there a way you can ask people not to share video?

This restored and colourised image of my grandparents and my father as a toddler (right) with his brother (left) has blown me away and given them a new life. It was taken 100 years ago! I remember my grandparents fondly, I spent a lot of time with them as a child at their Oxford home. My father holds his hand out in the image as the photographer said "Watch the birdie" to get their attention. He told me that many years ago - he died in 1996.

@DavidGHFrost They should display the tax charges like they do in the USA. People would be aware then of how much tax is hidden from them.

It's worth remembering, when the government complains about so-called "price gouging", that over half of the pump price (55% at current levels) is taxation. The government even charges VAT on the fuel duty - a tax on a tax!
Andy Mayer@mayerandrew

If I ran a forecourt I would: 🤑 Put the cost of taxes on signs by the pumps. 🤡 Next to a picture of the Minister responsible. ⛔️ Who I would refuse to serve. See how long the HMRC ‘price gouge’ survives that.

@fandompulse So true, Sir, it is an outrage and a desecration too at times. Respect the original author's vision.

George R.R. Martin on how film and TV adaptations make the story worse: "Everywhere you look, there are more screenwriters and producers eager to take great stories and “make them their own.”   It does not seem to matter whether the source material was written by Stan Lee, Charles Dickens, Ian Fleming, Roald Dahl, Ursula K. Le Guin, J.R.R. Tolkien, Mark Twain, Raymond Chandler, Jane Austen, or… well, anyone. No matter how major a writer it is, no matter how great the book, there always seems to be someone on hand who thinks he can do better, eager to take the story and “improve” on it.   “The book is the book, the film is the film,” they will tell you, as if they were saying something profound.  Then they make the story their own. They never make it better, though.  Nine hundred ninety-nine times out of a thousand, they make it worse." Is he right?

Douglas Coombes, Theatre Royal’s Facilities Manager, has worked non-stop on this project and is delighted that the permission has been approved on his penultimate day of his time with Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds: “It has been a pleasure to work with Debbie, Sean, the planning department, National Trust and all of the contractors involved in bringing Roy Hudd’s statue to life outside the theatre he called home. When the statue’s installation has been completed outside our historic venue, I shall take a seat next to Roy with pride.” suffolknews.co.uk/bury-st-edmund…

This is the WORST THING EVER. Publishing houses are using "sensitivity readers" and other in-house vandals to "update" and politically "correct" BOOKS by deceased authors (as well as living ones in some cases). It's an absolute outrage right out of the Ministry of Truth and it needs to be called out and stopped. If you want books in which all things problematic or depicting a previous layer of history are expunged, then WRITE THEM YOURSELVES. No? You can't? Then how dare you impose your current day Comstock Act on the work left to posterity by real writers? Leave the work of other authors alone. Show some damn respect. (Can't believe this needs to be said to publishers.)
Rawle Nyanzi@Parvenu62

This is also being done with Roald Dahl, Ian Fleming, even Ursula K. Le Guin. It’s not right, and it should stop. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pop novel, a great work of the Western canon, or anything else — this should not be done. It breaks trust.
