One would think that a rational person could understand Senator Lee’s distortion by reading what the words say. This is what the birthright citizenship clause says: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States…” Clearly, the phrase has to do with people who are subject to the laws of the United States, such as illegal aliens. It’s not a provision about loyalty. Foreign diplomats are not subject to the jurisdiction of the US. Before 1924, Native Americans were considered to be citizens of foreign nations and not of the United States. Those are two examples of the people who are excluded by this clause. Senator Lee knows this. He just regularly lies to the American people.
