ECIC Acting CEO, Ntshengedzeni Gilbert Maphula, participated in a panel discussion today, Thursday, 26 March 2026, hosted by the Algerian Company for Insurance and Export Guarantee (CAGEX) under the theme ‘Safe Access to Africa’. The high-level panel, which included Nebgha Enneifer Driss, Daniel Stausberg and Nazim Sini, discussed ways in which credit risk insurance can be mobilised to finance exporters on the Continent. Some of the key points which emerged were the need for a reliable source of information on buyers and the importance of digital platforms in accessing this information. The panel also addressed how to underwrite transactions in a politically uncertain environment characterised by ever-increasing risk. Speaking at the engagement session hosted jointly by ECIC and @MEMSA_ZA on Thursday, 19 March 2026, ECIC Senior Economist, Nezo Sobekwa, said a significant shift in the trajectory of Africa’s mining sector is underway. He highlighted that a growing number of African governments are adopting firm policies which reflect a change in their stance regarding the extraction of the continent’s minerals and their subsequent export outside of Africa in raw form. Nezo noted that this policy change signals a decisive move toward value addition and industrialisation in the mining sector across Africa, and one that places SMEs at the centre of the mining value chain. 𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗖 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗦𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 ECIC and @MEMSA_ZA are jointly hosting a practical session on ‘Expanding Mining Equipment Exports Beyond South Africa’ on Thursday, 19 March 2026, at the ECIC offices in Centurion. The workshop, which is aimed at MEMSA members, will bring together active exporters and mining equipment manufacturers with a view to building sector awareness as well as an understanding of the specific challenges facing mining equipment exporters. It will also demonstrate why ECIC is their ECA partner of choice. ECIC already supports exporters in the mining equipment sector and this event will provide a platform to explore collaborative strategies with MEMSA to expand the sector’s footprint across borders. ECIC Acting CEO, Ntshengedzeni Gilbert Maphula, was part of a delegation led by the South African Presidency on a State Visit to Brazil this week. South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa and His Excellency, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, witnessed the signing of agreements to elevate economic cooperation, including on the Tourism Action Plan 2026-2029 and the Trade & Investment Promotion between the Brazilian Trade & Investment Promotion Agency. The visit also included the South Africa-Brazil Business Forum, which served as a platform to discuss further collaboration between the two countries, and the respective delegations also engaged on shared geopolitical priorities as members of the global south, including cooperation in BRICS, IBSA, the G77+China, the G20, and the United Nations. As part of the “Brazil–South Africa Cooperation under BRICS”, ECIC was involved in the BRICS Reinsurance Task Force after the 2025 BRICS Summit. The Brazilian Presidency advanced the BRICS agenda on reinsurance cooperation by convening inclusive dialogues such as these, framing reinsurance as a strategic tool for resilience, and consolidating concrete proposals for future work. Although no agreement was reached on a specific initiative, the Task Force’s work demonstrated that BRICS countries are willing to explore innovative mechanisms, including investments in technical cooperation through initiatives such as the BRICS Reinsurance Risk Lab. The State Visit, which concludes today, 11 March 2026, opened the door for more frequent exchange amongst reinsurance regulators from the two countries, with the aim of deepening understanding of market differences and similarities, as well as identifying the most feasible areas for cooperation. #ECIC #BRICS #SAinBrazil

By providing political and commercial risk cover that most private insurers would deem non-acceptable risk or outside their underwriting criteria, the #ECIC supports South African capital-equipment suppliers operating in a tough economic environment.
