The Government is committed to expanding irrigation schemes in ASAL areas as part of efforts to boost food security and support livelihoods of pastoralists. Today, I chaired a high-level consultative meeting bringing together the Governors of the border counties of West Pokot and Turkana, Area Members of Parliament, alongside senior leadership from the Ministry of ASALs and Regional Development at Hazina Trade Centre, Nairobi. The meeting deliberated on the plans to establish Lower Turkwell Irrigation Project whose objective is to address food insecurity and promote peace between the two neighbouring communities. A series of community engagements will begin next week in the border areas of West Pokot and Turkana Counties to sensitize wananchi on various aspects of the project. Present were Dr. Augustine Cheruiyot, Senior Advisor and Head of the Presidential Economic Transformation Secretariat in the Executive Office of the President of Kenya; Hon. John Munyes Kiyong'a, Special Envoy for Peace in the Ateker Region; Governors H.E Simon Kachapin (West Pokot), H.E Jeremiah Lomorukai (Turkana); ASALs and Principal Secretary Kello Harsama, County Commissioners David Ntawuasa Saruni (West Pokot), Julius Kavita (Turkana), MPs Hon. Last week, we moved from policy to practice. On 10th December 2025, @TardaKE made a deliberate decision to act. We rolled out a basin-wide tree planting exercise aligned with the #PresidentialDirective to grow #15BillionTreesBy2032—not as a ceremonial activity, but as an operational response to declining forest cover, stressed water systems, and growing climate risk across the Tana and Athi basins. As the Authority mandated to manage these basins, leadership for us is measured in delivery. This Financial Year, TARDA committed to 650,000 trees, and the (over) 5,700 seedlings planted across all TARDA stations in December mark the first concrete step toward meeting that obligation. The exercise was intentionally targeted. From Nyandarua County, a critical part of the Aberdare catchment with forest cover at 17.33%, to Baba Dogo in Nairobi, where resilient species were planted to support the Athi ecosystem, and onward to Embu, where 1,400 seedlings now protect the Rupingazi River in a county with just 9.55% forest cover—this was restoration driven by data, basin priorities, and urgency. Even with unpredictable OND rains, we continue to plant. Climate change does not wait for perfect conditions, and neither can basin restoration. What made this initiative stand out was partnership. Communities, youth groups, government institutions, and private sector actors came together—not just to plant trees, but to care for them, protect them, and ensure they survive.
