درحالی که برخی تحلیلگران و رسانه‌های جریان اصلی مدعی بودند پس از عملیات نظامی آمریکا و اسرائیل علیه جمهوری اسلامی موج مهاجرت مردم ایران به کشورهای همسایه به راه می‌افتد، نه تنها این اتفاق نیفتاده است بلکه مهاجرت معکوس نیز پدید آمده است. خبرگزاری فرانسه می‌نویسد: کشورهای همسایه ایران از مدت‌ها پیش نگران بوده‌اند که هرگونه حمله به این کشور می‌تواند کل منطقه را بی‌ثبات کرده و موجی از پناهجویان را به راه بیندازد—اتفاقی که با وجود نزدیک به سه هفته حملات هوایی آمریکا و اسرائیل، تاکنون رخ نداده است. براساس این گزارش، تعداد ایرانیانی که به ترکیه عبور می‌کنند از زمان آغاز جنگ حدود یک‌سوم کاهش یافته است؛ موضوعی که به گفته وزیر کشور ترکیه، ناشی از اعمال محدودیت‌هایی از سوی تهران برای خروج ایرانیان از مرز است. مصطفی چفتچی، وزیر کشور ترکیه، به خبرنگاران گفت: «از زمان آغاز جنگ، شهروندان ما بدون هیچ محدودیتی توانسته‌اند به ایران عبور کنند؛ اما ایران برای شهروندان خود محدودیت‌هایی اعمال کرده است.» او همچنین افزود: «در عین حال، تعداد ایرانیانی که از ترکیه به کشور خود بازمی‌گردند افزایش یافته است» در طول مرز ۵۰۰ کیلومتری میان ترکیه و ایران، سه گذرگاه مرزی وجود دارد. در دوم مارس، دو طرف به‌طور متقابل توافق کردند که عبورهای یک‌روزه از مرز را متوقف کنند. چفتچی گفت: «ما گذرگاه‌های مرزی خود را به‌دقت زیر نظر داریم و در حال حاضر مشکلی وجود ندارد.» در حال حاضر، بیش از ۷۴ هزار ایرانی دارای مجوز اقامت در ترکیه هستند و حدود ۵۰۰۰ پناهجو نیز در این کشور حضور دارند.
