In this thought-provoking interview with NLSIR Online, @FuchsSandhya discusses her groundbreaking book, "Fragile Hope: Seeking Justice for Hate Crimes in India." Moving beyond conventional analyses of conviction rates, Dr. Fuchs reveals how Dalit communities in Rajasthan interpret, mobilize, and find hope within a legal system often stacked against them. The conversation spans numerous critical issues: the ethnographic research methodology, the power of individual narratives in understanding systemic issues, the role of courts and public interest litigation, and the complex intersectionality of caste and gender. Dr. Fuchs discusses the concept of "legal meliorism" - gradual improvement through persistent legal engagement - while candidly addressing both the potential and limitations of special courts, protection cells, and legal reform efforts. Throughout the interview, she explores how victims navigate difficult choices between pursuing justice and avoiding further trauma.
