Lots of talk about tyres lately and I love it! I'm sure that @bernie_collins1 who be thrilled with all the tyre chat. I always enjoyed this series from @Gem_Tech in @RacecarEngineer on tyre rubber, and grip. Links below ⬇️ Pay attention to how the rubber modulus changes with temperature. The increased surface temperature of the tyre from pushing too early without high-frequency loading causing hysteretic heating of the bulk rubber is to be avoided. This is why race engineers ask their drivers to "bring the tyre in" during a tyre change. racecar-engineering.com/tech-explained… This article on tyre grip is really great as well. The differences in indentation and molecular grip can be complex, but easy enough to understand in this article. Make the connection between the "how rubber works" figure showing the glass transition temperature and the explanation of the two forms of grip. This is why cold tyres have less grip. racecar-engineering.com/tech-explained… In my opinion, it's so much better to watch races and follow along when you understand a bit more of the "why" things are happening. When I was in F1, one of the tyre blankets was removed too early so the car left the garage with one tyre a few degrees cooler. This never got up to temperature throughout the stint 🥶 F1 tyres are so sensitive, one degree can significantly affect performance 🌡️

@Gem_Tech In Indy, overcut is a bit more powerful due to refueling. However, the saftey car rules also means the pitlane is closed so if you do try and overcut you run a risk of losing many positions if someone does crash, an early undercut can also gain you tons due to this.

@momedic9019 Ah I see - thanks. It’s difficult to get IndyCar in the UK! So do they mostly overcut rather than undercut because of the slower warm up on new tyres?

@Gem_Tech IndyCar has never had tire warmers, just like NASCAR, they spread them out in the sun to try and gain as much heat at possible
