Today on the ward round at a patient’s bedside I did something that made the FY1 say ‘that’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen’ What do you think it was…?

@StpTara As a Haematologist looking for myeloma or assessing for Hodgkin relapse, an ESR is invaluable (better than repeat PET-CTs). Only last week I discovered worsening anaemia in a pt with MDS was due to myeloma because ESR 140, CRP 2

Important message: there is reason why the NHS has a two week wait policy to diagnose cancer. We are in week six of lockdown

And that's a wrap for Ski 2019. What a fabulous week. The group were awesome and should be very proud of their achievements. We have seen them grow so much this week. Rest up and enjoy the weekend.

@NMacdonaldBHT Most of these will have biopsies taken which then need Pathologists to look at for cancer. Helen E (Specialist Services)

@graham74GC I can’t see the definition of ‘lower volume oncologists’ in this US study. Please be careful about the message going out to patients being treated in DGHs in the UK - do we have data that their outcomes are inferior to larger centres? H Eagleton, Bucks

Very thought provoking study suggesting that older DLBCL patients treated in centres which treat more Lymphoma do better. Need to be cautious in interpreting and applying this data though. There are huge benefits in being treated locally.
Tim Fenske@timfenske

Interesting study showing reduced hosp rate, improved OS for DLBCL treated by MDs with higher lymphoma volume. Is it time for more specialized hem/onc care (even in the community setting)? ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3021643…

@graham74GC This guideline has prevented UK armed forces personnel from being deployed as irradiated blood can’t be provided in the field. Frustrating that we have to restrict careers and the defence of the nation based on such flimsy evidence.

Personally I think irradiated blood is not really needed for any Hodgkin patients (unless maybe having a SCT) especially in countries like the UK where red cells are routinely leucodepleted. Based on very old data. However I of course stick to the guidelines! twitter.com/drraulcordoba/…
Raul Cordoba, MD, PhD@DrRaulCordoba

These guidelines may follow the previous recommendations for lifelong irradiated blood, but there is a suggestion that it may be safe to stop using irradiating blood 5 years after the last treatment for #Hodgkin #lymphoma #lymsm twitter.com/drraulcordoba/…

@philesavage You’re the reason I applied to work at Stoke Mandeville 15yrs ago. Thanks for being a great radiologist who cares about the person at the end of the scan ;-)
